My whole axle is being replaced right now...

The knocking noise I posted about last week has been diagnosed by my dealer as a shot differential. The service guy tells me they will replace the entire axle rather than just the diff to avoid any chance for install errors. The axle is on order, and until then, I'm driving an Altima on Nissan's dime.

Mileage on the truck: 36,265. I bought the Gold+ 7/100,000 mile warranty which has just paid for itself with this 1 repair! I guess dragging around 8,500 lbs of boat may have killed the diff. I did cook all the paint off my original steel diff cover and the dealer gave me a new finned model, but not until after several long, hot towing trips.

Anyone have an idea what a new axle costs, plus installation?

The diff is covered under the standard drivetrain warranty (even w/o your 7/100,000 warranty)

think the rear end plus labor is like 3,200 bucks, when you get your rear end back buy yourself the Detroit LSD which is like 10x stronger than the factory diff..
the factory one sucks hardcore..

Toomnymods, you've been busy. You could almost build another truck from your leftover old parts! Nice stuff - you must be quite a mechanic.

How much is the Detroit LSd installed?

I didn't install my detroit limited slip diff i left that to the pros :P but the cost with the diff and the carrier bearings was like 535.00 shipped might also want to get your professionally installed as well should be able to get it done for under 250.00 if you supply the synthetic fluids..

I just picked my truck up from the dealer. I had the rear axle replaced. I was told that the ring and pinion was tore up. I took my truck in on Saturday and got it back today, no questions asked. I was also told that the new rear end was a newer, stronger version. Does anyone know if there is some truth to this?

There have been prior posts that they went to a 4 spider rear axle. I am unclear as to whether that applies only to the e-locker or to all rear axles.
