Almost just got busted!!

Well, I had just left the gas station at about 1AM this morning. I was cruising down the highway with my radar detector on (Passport 8500 x50). About a minute from my turnoff, there is a car coming toward me. All the sudden, when the car was about 100 feet from my truck, my radar detector lights up full 5 Ka bars!!! It was a Texas DPS State Trooper. Thankfully, I was going the speed limit, but it just gave me a little shock, since he had his radar off until the last few seconds. Had I been speeding, I would have been toast for sure. My radar has the instant-on protection (pop), but that only works if the radar detects him "popping" other cars in front of me. I was the only one on the highway, so it didn't pick it up. Anyways, just wanted to share my story with everyone, so you don't always trust your detector, especially when it's late at night and you can't see the cars like you can in the daytime.

Phew!! So glad I wasn't speeding.

And no flaming me, please.

yep they're only tools but it keeps you on your toes and also keeps you from getting trapped.

radar detectors are useless. i've been ticket free for 2 years now and i've had my share of 120mph runs (not with the truck obviously)

I gave up the detectors because i could not hear them over the stereo and the "instant on" will get you every time...Whatever floats your boat..

I agree they're not as useful as they once were since most of the police now use laser.... mine still does save me once in awhile and the laser feature at least lets you know you've been 'zapped' and gives you a minute to hide your beer before the cop is at your window...

I run mine all the time. I do find it to be usefull. Not all the time, but sometime. That "sometime" is quite enough to make it worth what I spent on it. There aren't guarantees on much in life, but I'll take my chances WITH my detector rather than without. I like the odds just a little better.

Slow down, enjoy the ride.

All you are doing is increasing stress by driving fast. Do you think a couple of minutes are worth a ticket or accident?

Been there done that, older and wiser now!

4 innocent people got killed in my home town because of people racing. The driver lost control, crossed the center line and had a head-on. The driver is alive and I am sure will do some jail time for killing 4 people.

The radar detector gives you a false sense of security. Here in Dallas nobody really knows how to drive anyway so the normal traffic speed is always 10 miles over the actual limit. They can't pull us all over.

speed doesn't kill.. plenty of cops still use radar but they have gotten smarter in the way they park, so even if the radar is on, you might get nailed regardless. the instant on only works in certain situations really

I havent had a ticket in 14 years until last July 4th on the way to St augustien through Orlando. A radar detector would not have being a help been as the plane over me was timing me at 82 in a 70. That was the first ticket in 14 years and he wasnt about to let me go. I asked him if he was giving any breaks. But he said with my record he normally would but he couldnt because the aircraft got me and he wasnt the issueing officer. The officer in the plane was.

As I said, I was going the speed limit. There are certain instances when I judge it to be safe to go over the speed limit. That's why I have the detector.

the fun of speeding on the interstate is gone now that I'm driving a gas-guzzler!! But when I had a 2001 Civic EX coupe I could do 85-90 mph for two hours straight and still get 30 mpg... back then speeding was fun!

Exactly why I don't speed as much anymore! The slower I drive, the better people can see my sweet truck! haha
