Need help with rear axle breather mod..cant get the new breather threaded
LOL, can someone help me (Yes I tried the search function first).? I am trying to complete the axle breather mod that CJ3FLYR was so gracious to introduce. I read his directions, but I cant get the 1/8mpt into the hole. I realize that it is slightly different than the stock POS 1/8 fitting and have read several posts where members state that the new 1/8mpt will have to be forced into the hole and will cause some minor re-threading. But, for the life of me, I cant get the darn thing even started. I am confident that once I get it "biting" enough, I can force it in the rest of the way. After much research and talking to many mechanics, they insist this is a must do mod as it can save our seals from leaking and help our rear diff/axles breath so much better than the oem factory check valve. So, any ideas from those of you that have done this mod? Any help would be appreciated as I am very frustrated . LOL, thanks!

I had the same problem with mine. I ended up getting a die that fit the factory check valve and re-threading the 1/8" barb about 1/4 to 1/2 way up the threads. Teflon taped' the threads and screwed the thing in. It went right in after I did that. Hope that helped.

Please forgive my ignorance in this matter, but what exactly is a die? Is this something I can get at a hardware store? And, how do i re-thread the 1/8" barb? Thanks
Re: Need help with rear axle breather mod..cant get the new breather threaded
a tap threads a hole, a die theads something to fit in a threaded hole.
tap= nut , die = screw
You can gat a tap at a hardware store to change your threads or posibly go ask a local mechanic if he'd cut the threads for you. Offer him a few dollars for lunch and I'm sure he'll do it. You need to know what size threads are in the hole.

I picked up the correct sized vent tube from toyota. It's large enough so you can use 5/16" tubing, cost about $4 and wasn't in stock. I know nissan makes one but it has a smaller tube and I had already purchased some 5/16" fuel line so I just used toyota's part. Here's the part#(90404-51026) listed as "union".

He's not tapping the hole in the rear. He's cutting new threads on the piece going into the rear so there aren't any loose shavings.

Right, I definately would NOT tap the rear diff. I re-threaded the fitting going into the rear end. I also kept the check valve incase any warranty issues come up.

Re: Need help with rear axle breather mod..cant get the new breather threaded
Does anyone know if the stock vent tube is mpt, Bspt, metric??? I ordered a bspt tube that will hopefully be a direct match to my stock tube and will then mate a mpt/barb 1/8" to the bpst fitting. I just hope that the threads are bspt. Any knowledge or thoughts about what type our breather tube is?
Re: Need help with rear axle breather mod..cant get the new breather threaded
If you can, remove the check valve and go match it up with a nut that has a known thread size/type and you'll have your answer. Many hardware stores have metrics in stock to use as a size guide.
