I want to know why systems like the magnaflow catback are louder than just the muffler swap if the same mufflers are used. With the catback system they leave the stock y pipe just like it would be if you just changed the muffler. Are other parts of the exhaust bigger and if so is that whats making the full system louder than just the muffler.

Not all catbacks keep the factory y pipe. Infact, I think most catbacks replace the y pipe and everything back.
The reason they are louder has to do with the size of the pipe, the muffler, and the tip. I've heard people getting a completely different sound just by replacing the tip.

Ok but if you didnt use a tip like alot of people do then why is the full magnaflow system louder than just the muffler swap.Is it because of the size of the pipe used?
Yes, it is due to the size of the pipe and the corresponding frequency change of the exhaust due to the change in system resistance.

There are so many trucks around here with that hollow sounding drone from their aftermarket exhaust systems it's ridiculous. I don't know about you, but that would drive me crazy listening to that all the time.
Some people have had good results putting the Gibson tip on with their Banks exhaust system. Less drone and a more mellow deeper sound. The muffler and tip are probably the biggest factors in how a particular exhaust system sounds. Pipe size, firing order and the engine valvetrain design are also important as well. DOHC engines like ours will always have slightly different sound from the exhaust than a comparable pushrod or SOHC V8 engine of the same size.
Ever wonder why the 4.6L Mustangs sound so darn good compared to an LS1 Camaro or Corvette? Well, a large part of it is due to the firing order of the Ford modular V8.
