Question New Member with questions..yea yea I know

Hello everyone,

Just purchased a Used 2004 LE KC 4X4 with 49,000 miles off ebay.
(would post the URL if I was allowed to) I have been reading about the rear diff and brake issues. Still think it is the best half ton out there. I plan on pulling my 24' Mariah at about 6500 lbs. Is there anyway that I can find out if the rear diff has blown out already or if the brakes have been replaced? Will the dealer let me know if I give them the VIN? Or has anyone here owned this truck? Think it came out of Arkansas. Any other advice would be appreciated.

I suppose you could ask the person you purchased the truck from for the service records??????

If you know the dealer who serviced the truck, the VIN should give you the repair history of the truck. Actually, any dealer can call up the service record based on the VIN. I also think that the diff repair was a diff cover replacement, besides anything else that had to be replaced. Just look at the rear diff and see if it is the finned version or the smooth one. Smooth: not replaced.

Re: New Member with questions..yea yea I know

Thanks Guys....I checked the rear diff cover and it is black and a little rusted (I assume it is has never been replaced). Should I worry about replacing the cover with one of those 05 covers with the ribs? Or is a change to synthetic enough? And if so...do I wait to tow with it until I get a chance to switch it out. I have a trip to Lake Powell planned for next weekend. I can pull my boat with my old truck if I need to.

The smooth cover doesn't dissipate the heat enough to allow the synth to do what it needs to. You may luck out, but to do it right and make sure you keep it on the road, do the total swap. If your dealer doesn't do it under warranty, there's a couple aftermarket suppliers who provide a nice ribbed cover. But yes, the synth swap is recommended for longevity.

Any dealer will have the full repair record....if the work was done at a Nissan dealer. Warranty work, such as the brakes, would also be readily available.
