Rearend hop at 50mph?

Have any of you folks experienced a wheel hop coming from the rearend of your truck? I typically feel it when I keep a constant 45 to 50 mph on the highway. It's kind of like the truck starts bouncing in the rearend. I have the off road package. I'm thinking it may be that the Rancho's just aren't performing well. Perhaps the Bilstein's will solve the issue. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I get that same feeling and mostly on highway. I thought it was just something about having such a sturdy frame on the truck (unlike the Tundra that flex's like a buick). Is it just normal truck feeling (this is my first pickup)?

I'd have to answer no, but not knowing your mileage, maybe your shocks are worn? I know others have bashed the Ranchos on their trucks, I happen to like mine. If your truck has low miles on it, have it checked by the dealer.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I've got about 42,000 miles on it. I recall reading something on this site a few months back where someone was having the same issue. I've owned a full size truck and a mid size truck before the Titan and I've never experienced this. I don't feel it in the steering wheel when it happens, just in the seat. I look at my rearview mirror and I can see the bed hopping.

Have you tried getting the tires rotated and balanced?

Yep. Actually have brand new tires on it. I was feeling the hop on the into work this morning at around 30 mph.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I have under 10K and noticed this hop since I bought the truck.

We do however have frost humps in the road, dont know if other states have these. Just grooves every so often to allow for highways to shrink and expand during the seasons. You can always feel them, might be part of the issue. Do you have these?

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I noticed the same on mine (06 4x2 XE CC) right after I bought it (it had ~15 miles at the time).
Since this is my first p/u I thought it was just the light bed or fat tires or road condition... since it's inconsistent, I really thought nothing of it til now that someone's mentioned it.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I know the expansion grooves you are talking about. There are none on this road. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the aerodynamics with the tailgate up. Perhaps the downforce against the tailgate at a certain mph works the rear suspension a little bit, making it hop.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I've got the same problem with mine. It's a '04 crew cab with off road. Mine has been there since around 2,000 miles. I now have a little over 45,000 and it has gotten worse with more miles. You really notice it at 47 mph and it's real bad at 58 mph. You can look in the side mirror and see the bed shake. Had it checked under warranty several times and they would road force balance the tires each time, but it did not help. Service Manager finally said several of the technicians had driven it, there was a problem, but no one knew what to do because they had driven a new one and it had the same problem. He said the problem was recorded and if anything came up about the it, they would contact me. Also, a new set of Bridgestones haven't helped either.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I think you're using the wrong definition here. Rearend hop is something most all solid rear vehicles get while making turns at speed over rough roads....like a bumpy on or off ramp and the reasr feels like it's coming out from under you. Wheel hop would be a bad shock on one side. It's not likely they'll both go bad at one time, and usually you'll notice unever tire wear far before you feel anything.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

Johnny Ray's description matches up to mine perfectly. Whatever you call it, it doesn't feel right. Are you saying it is not the shocks? I'm under the impression the Rancho's on the off road kit are just your plain jane RS5000's. I'm running some RS 9000X's on my CJ-7. They have the adjustable dampening rate. They are a much better shock than the RS 5000. I'm thinking these shocks might help to smooth out some of the hopping. I've experienced this since day 1. Perhaps the Bilsteins PreRunner Greg sells would help to alleviate the problem...

No no...actually, I'm thinking it would be the shocks. But not because they're Ranchos though...but because there's a problem with them. My trucks has them and rides great. I guess I was just a bit confused as to the discription of wheel hop.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

I've had my son look out the window while I was driving and he said it's hard to tell what's going on. He's not sure, but the wheels look smooth and the whole bed is shaking. I'm thinking shocks also because I'm reading posts about drivelines and axles being changed and not helping. I've had the brake changes and they didn't help either. I also pull a bass boat and it makes no difference, the shake is still there at the same speeds. I've never had a load in the bed to see if that makes a difference. I know it's a truck and it needs scratches in the bed and all, but I use my other truck for that. This one is for pulling that boat and every day use.

Re: Rearend hop at 50mph?

Anyone running those Bilsteins that PreRunner Greg sells? I'll see if i can't find a thread on this site that discusses them. If nothing else, they look pretty cool!
