TPMS(Tire pressure monitoring system) light came on the other day and there was a big change in weather over night. I noticed it came on first thing in the morning while going to work and thought nothing of it cause the truck was running smooth. After work, I looked over my tires and checked the tire pressure. Recommended pressure is 35psi(according to the info on the side door panel of truck). Checked all 4 tires and they were all at 35psi except one of them which was at 33 1/2psi. I thought, the light couldn't come on because of that??? I wasn't sure so I filled it up at the gas station, all of 1 second to fill it. Drove for 30 seconds and the light turned off. I was quite surprised! Wow, that was pretty accurate and I was amazed. I've never owned a vehicle with this on it and was pretty surprised at the results. I always though they only come on when you've got 10-15psi left, not short 1 1/2psi. Oh well, glad it's there as opposed to not.
Standard, during cranking the TPMS light on the dash should light up briefly, this is what's called a bulb test, you as the driver are supposed to take notice of any bulbs not lighting up...

It's huge on your gas mileage as well. I was freaking out because my mpg went from a solid 16 down to like 13 or 12. I was driving around for close to three weeks with that light on like an idiot. The tire pressure was about 30 and i pumped it up to about 40 and now my mpg is back around 16.

That's interesting to know. I guess I'll have to pump mine up to 40lbs.
One thing to note, be careful about trusting the pressure displayed by the TPMS. Mine did the same thing when it got colder here. the light came on and the tires were down to 30, 30, 27, 30. So I just put the winter air in them, like you're supposed to do, and by my electronic air pressure gauge, there was 39 lbs. in each tire. When I started up the truck and drove it, the light went off and I checked the pressure readout on the computer. It said 34, 35, 34, 35. That's 4 to 5 lbs. different than the gauge at the valve stem.
So I double checked them all with two other tire pressure gauges I own that are the standard type. They agreed with my electronic gauge and NOT with the truck computer sensors.
I'm not saying the TPMS is bad. On the contrary, I like it. I like to know if there's a differential between the tire pressures. Just saying don't stake your life on it's accuracy.

40psi.. that seems high. Do your tires have more wear in the center?
I haven't seen any yet, but It hasn't been that long. I was going to check them this weekend and see what they say. I pumped them up to the amount by mistake to be honest, because the first place i went to get air had a broken air pressure gauge and it's was reading the pressure lower than it really was.

How did you check the pressure on your computer? Are you refering to the navigation package? I don't have the nav system so I don't know what all is included with that. If it can be checked on the regular computer, would you reveal how that is done? I remember a thread somewhere that talked about how the gage display could flash alot of information if properly told to.
Thanks

Can anyone verify what the best PSI is other than the manufacturer's ratings??? I'm assuming 40PSI would be better for the street, it would only make sense but cannot verify this.

Sorry. Yes, I have the factory nav system with the integrated onboard computer. There's a screen for the tire pressure and service dates. I didn't stop to think that not everyone who has TPMS has the computer. Sorry again.
Please disregard any information you may not have received from the aforementioned posts. This has been a public service announcement......
I ran 38-40 in teh OEm off road tires and I had excessive wear down the center from over inflation. Now I have on some Pirrelli's scorpions and I run them at 35psi. after 20000 miles they look great
Mine goes off after I change elevation....same areas too! The system does really work though...once it drops under 35 psi..the light goes off...kind of a weird margin...but I inflate my rear tires at 37psi and my front at 40.
