Well, I was checking my fluids this morning and I noticed that my PSF was right at the cold min line, so I thought I should add some. I went to the dealer and they handed me a bottle of Matic D ATF fluid. I asked if that was right for power steering and the parts guys said yes. Before I pour this stuff into my PSF resovoir is this the right fluid?
Why were you going to add fluid if it was right at the line? If there are no leaks, it's fine, it doesn't evaporate...
Sorry, I don't know if that's the correct fluid for the p/s...

Old wives tale kind of, of it being OK to use ATF for PS. Was never OK to use PS in ATF though. It used to be OK, really. I just wouldn't compromise on any fluid choices. Absolutely never. What is fluid vs safety-Life vs 5 bucks,
Check your owners manual for correct designation of fluid. But like above, if at cold line, leave it alone. PS rarely goes low, just check it occaisionally. When you see dust accumulate, that is a hint of a leak.
Never use anything other than the Nissan (dealer) Matic J (thanks bestatchess) for the trans. No other fluid on market today is accepted by Nissan for their trans, Don't take any chances on that one. Search for details.

Matic J for the tranny. Matic D for the transfer case (if 4x4).
my banjo bolt coming out of my PS pump was loose and I lost a little fluid. I am now at the minimum level and was wondering the same thing about the PS fluid. The manual say "Nissan PS fluid" then some crap about:
Recommended fluid is Genuine NISSAN PSF or equivalent.
Refer to MA-11, "Fluids and Lubricants" . which then says under the note: *3: For Canada, NISSAN Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), DEXRONTM III or MERCONTM or equivalent ATF may also be used.
So what, sounds like stick some ATF in there, they are both red :-)

So, Dealer told him right thing , but without explaining. Thanks for the clarification. Interesting with all the discussion the boards have had on the Tranny fluid issue. I'd of expected "Genuine Nissan PS Fluid" to be sold him.
Thanks again bestatchess too.
