with a oil filter replacement every 2500. Am I doing any of this too often or not enough? I use the 5/30 (regular) mobil 1 w/ nissans filter. At 7.50 a filter should I be going w/aftermarket?

Thanks for the advice. I just got off the phone with the guys at Mobil and he thanked me for sending his kids through school and he advised me that I was changing my oil to frequently and should find out what the highest milage schedule for the truck is and go off of that. I believe its about 7000 or 7500 miles, then he told me that the only reason for that is because of the warranty and they test the oil up to 35,000 miles. This was for the Mobil 1 full synthetic oil.

I say if you don't mind spending the money, then do it as often as you feel comfortable. I'm on a 3000 mile change schedule for synthetic oil and the filter. It costs me about $35 bucks 4 times a year average.
Can I get more miles out of it? Sure.
Am I comfortable getting more miles out it? No.
Even at 3000 miles, the oil still comes out dirty, so what am I hurting?
In my opinion not changing your oil and filter regularly is one of the worst things you can do to your engine.
I know some of the synthetics are now rated for 12K miles an above, but just because the oil is rated to maintain its lubricating properties for an extended period doesn't mean it's the best thing for your engine.
Just my 2c. I know other opinions will differ.

This is an old question that will prove people have a wide view of opinions, and I'm not saying it hurts to ask though.
(Mobile 1 10w30 here) I change my filter every 5K (purolator brand mostly or the Fram Micron) and put a fresh quart in. Change all the oil on the 3rd filter change. My oil has never looked bad at a full change and I've not seen any crap in it.
Quality oils can stand a lot of use. Synthetic oils are amazing!
In aircraft engines (Turbines) Synthetic oil rairly get changed at all. Just tested regularly for contaminants and only changed then if they read too high on testing. Filters are another matter.

I used amsoil xl7500 with nissan filter. I changed mine every 7500 miles and the oil looked great(like dino oil with 3k miles) I still have that interval on the wifes Xterra. Only difference now is I use Napa Gold oil filter.

I'm with you on the oil change - Mobil 1 at 5000 mile intervals. Makes it easy to remember when to change it. I think the filter every 2500 miles is overkill. I change it with the oil every 5000 miles. I use the OEM filters from courtesy.

I think I will keep my interval but only change filters at the oil change. I was going to go to 7500 but I just cant bring myself to do it.

I also use Mobil1 5/30 and Purolator filters every 5000 miles. I only do this because it's cheap and easy to do so....a little earlier won't hurt. The owners manual says to go 7500 miles so 10k is easily doable with synthetic oil. The oil color when changing it means very little. Changing the filter anytime other than when the oil is changed is humorous to me and not needed. Just makes a mess and you're always guessing the amout to put back in. Just pay the few bucks and change em' both together.

I send my used motor oil to a lab to actually see how I am doing. In my untrained opinion, the 5.6 is a nice wearing V8 compared to, say, the big 3. The toyo V8's wear very nicely too, at least as evidenced by oil analysis.
My OCI is 5k at this point (but I live in the mountains). There are a couple of us (Titan owners) that post our oil analysis results on that server.

An oil analysis is a little over the top IMO....lol. Just change it at the required interval with the required oil and filter.

Several years ago I read a book entitled "The Oil Man's Bible." At that time, I had just started using synthetics, and it completely changed the way I looked at and feel about oil and filter changes. Up until that time, I had been a strict traditionalist....changing oil and filter every 3000 miles...because that is what conventional wisdom said you should do.
I soon learned, however, the incredible benefits to be gained by running a pure synthetic. For example: There are some over-the-road, long-distance trucks on the highway that have not had an oil change in over 400,000 miles. Yes....four hundred thousand miles. Filters are changed on a regular basis, and periodically, an oil analysis is performed to make sure the oil still possesses appropriate lubricating characteristics and viable additives.
It is important to point out that if you are going to go with extended oil changes, you must also employ extended oil-change filters. Four dollar paper filters from K-Mart or Wally World will not cut it. As an example, Mobil 1 makes an extended-life oil filter. Within the past year, Amsoil began to sell an extended-life oil filter that is guaranteed to maintain filtering performance and efficiency for 25,000 miles.
In recent years, I have geen going with 7500 mile oil and filter changes using 100% synthetics and extended-life filters. Having gained personal confidence in these products (Mobil 1 and Amsoil, specifically), and having read 100s of pages of lab results, I am now seriously considering 15,000 mile oil and filter changes.....with an occasional oil analysis conducted at the end of the 15,000 mile period, just to make sure and to satisfy my own curiosity.
I have truly come to believe data should consistently win out over habit, tradition and conventional wisdom.

But we're not driving over the road trucks or plan on 100k mile oil change intervals. An ordinary paper filter will certainly last the 3k to 7.5k miles suggested by the manufacturer. Even a Mobil1 5/30 oil change and Purolator (or Nissan) filter cost less than $30. So why all the hubub? Sure, if you the time to read up on how you can get one more mile out of a $5 QT of Mobil1, that's fine. Most people don't have time like that to waste on gaining nothing to speak of. Huge fleet owners of Kenworth trucks (or any OTR truck type) may benefit but that's about it.
Yes it is very interesting information, some info most didn't even know so....I'm not meaning to putting down the knowledge here, just the usefullness of it in our everyday situations.
