well they keep adding more and more gears to vehicles to try to improve economy. The CVT is the ultimate auto trans, very little weight and not too many parts. Yes they are not currently able to handle much but one day they will be.
In the past big truck manufactures (mack, freightliner etc..) only used manual transmissions in thier dump trucks, tractors, and fire apparatus and said that an automatic trans could not handle the loads, now look there are loads of allson 5 and 6 speed autos in them, so time will tell.

I could tell you all about the next powertrain......but I don't want to violate the confidentiality rules, which would put me and the wifey out on the street, which she'd kill me over.
Next engines will be a drastic improvement over an already great engine. I got a good laugh out of the V6 suggestion though!
Seriously, if anyone "in the know" posted any info on here, they're either completely stupid and just don't care about getting fired, or they're full of BS. Read all you want on the internet, it's just all speculation. If there is any truth to it, it was intentionally leaked as a teaser.

And consider the cost factor...millions to design and build a CVT for a rwd truck...and why...what's wrong with the 5 speed auto, that everyone praises?
Total BS!
I was talking with the sales guy when I did one of my Titan test drives and he told me it cost Nissan 80 million dollars to retool and put some models dash cluster in the center of the dash, everyone hated it and they had to put it back. Thats 3 feet of wiring and reprograming some pre-existing robots, which is a drop in the bucket compared to something as link dependant as a transmission. Unless the new design accomodates it seemlessly, they'd need new engine mounting points for the tranny, new drive shaft, i dunno what else.
In a way I almost hope they do it, because I can see that blowing up HUGE!! and I'd have a perfectly tuned and ready to go 07 looking for top dollar

Your salesperson was referring to the Quest, which in 2007 has had a major dash overhaul. Nissan moved the gauges back behind the steering wheel where they belong. I find the 80 million figure to be a bit high however for just a dash mod.

ya prolly some sales guy feeding you some bs while trying to sell you a truck.
Remember the deactivation system Cadillac once offered?
POS
Two...four...six...eight..watch your Caddy depreciate!
Great idea, but too mechanical for reliability. Now done reliably and commonly with electronics.
As for the Caddy - I remember seeing the 2 guys interviewed on the local news back in the mid 70's; demo'ing the system and hoping to get it in production with someone. Somebody has to start the revolution.
