Break in and MPG effect

Just curious... a friend of mine has an 07 FJ4 cruiser and after breakin he said his mileage went up dramatically, like 4 mpg or so. I just gassed up my first refill today, 250 miles on 21 gals. Not quite what I was hoping for since I've never taken it over 3k on the tach. On the other hand this is the first new truck I've ever bought. I bought my Ninja brand new in 03, and the theory there is break it in like you stole it, and we measure those in Smiles per gallon. (yes, I'm the idiot doing a 120mph wheelie while lane splitting in stopped freeway traffic) which is why I figured I'd buy the Titan now instead of letting my Ma pick out a coffin lol

so back to the topic... does the milage go UP after break in, or did I just see the best I'm gonna get?

Re: Break in and MPG effect

Mileage has been reported by some as high as 20 MPG. I've gotten VERY nearly that. I've also had non towing tanks where I got 12. Those were some very fun tanks! What mileage you get will be dictated first and foremost by your right foot. Second by what type driving, whether highway or city. And next, what kind of truck do you have? As for a direct answer to your question, it's probably not the best one your going to see. But it may not be the worst either. One of our members reported a towing tank of just a little over 5 mpg. Most of mine are highway miles and I average a little over 17 mpg. I'm a KC with the big tow gears.

Re: Break in and MPG effect

Hatch,

Don't quite understand your read? Break it in like you stole it, but you haven't been over 3K on the tach?? Get it over 3K and seal those piston rings. 12 MPG isn't that bad. It will get about 2-3 mpg better. Just cross you fingers.

Re: Break in and MPG effect

"break it in like you stole it" is the Ninja philosophy. I get 22mpg on that, and I hit the throttle. HARD. A LOT. EVERY RIDE. (I dont even fire the ninja up unless I'm ready to do 120+) The ninja redlines at 11.5k and is speed limited to 186 (300kph) from the factory. I've got no reason to lie, I've never seen that myself, I had my share of oil starvation excitement at 175mph and after living through that I pretty much figured I was done with the top speed runs.

the 3k tach reading is the Titan and I honestly dont know if I really have even broken 2.8 yet really. I did get to almost 90 on the freeway once but that was in morning traffic just going to work on the 78 which always moves fast. and that was at just a smidge over 2k on the tach.

Re: Break in and MPG effect

I've got about 700 miles on my truck so far, mixture of driving but I'd say 75% city and I get just shy of 13mpg so far. I can't wait to get back from vacation in AZ so I can drive it more and finally get it broken in!
