Service engine soon light

Hey Guys, Just wondering what the main cause of the service engine light being activated. i have had this dealt with twice already, now on my way to work today it went on again. The last time it was fixed the dealer said it was some sort of seal, not sure what they were talking about. Is this something I could drive on for a while as i can't get it into the shop until next week sometime. Also i heard that the light will reset after a certain amount of times turning the ignition key is this true ? Thanks for the help.

Re: Service engine soon light

The main cause is the gas cap not being screwed on tight. Try that first and the if that's the problem the light will go out after a few miles.

Re: Service engine soon light

You can turn the light of by doing the ECU reset but unless the problem is fix the light will come back.
How to:ECU Reset,Throttle & Accelerator Position Learning

Best thing is to pull the code to see what the problems is.

Re: Service engine soon light

that light is activated by any emmissions system malfunction, so dont sweat it. Just make sure you have oil in it and drive it like you stole it!

Re: Service engine soon light

mine went on when

my fuel pump stopped working,
when my cats blew out,
when I fouled my plugs, and
when a "com" cable needed to be reseated

20k on my truck, so every 5 thousand miles she gets to see the dealer

The CEL is for emissions componants. 99% of the time it's a loose gas cap (the light can come on if you're the type who fuels up while letting it run) or the typical crappy Bosch O2 sensors Nissan has used for years.

Re: Service engine soon light

mine turned out to be a bad left catalytic convertor where the honeycomb internally broke apart thus setting off the SES light. had that replaced, but it was too late! turns out schrapnel from the bad cat had been sucked back in and blew my motor. with 54,000 miles had a long block engine replacement and now she runs strong like bull again ($0 paid).

word of advice, don't just do the reset cause you can, get that code pulled and find out exactly what it is from a service tech!

Re: Service engine soon light

Could the gas cap reason be throwing the 0455 code? (large canister)?

0455 is probably the gas cap, I got that code when I forgot to close it one day.

Re: Service engine soon light

The dealer said the gasket on top of the gas tank has caused this condition (gross leak) to trigger the light.
