Need help with a popping noise.

It being hunting season I have been on some pretty bad roads lately and have noticed a pretty bad popping noise. Its not when the shocks compress its just the opposite its when the shocks are extended like when going over a place where there is a sharp drop off,may only be 2 or 3 inches of drop off but for that split second the shocks extend and I get a pop, sounds like metal on metal.Thanks.

Re: Need help with a popping noise.

Check for loose items in the cab or bed. Is jack and tool pouch secure? About spare tire? I had similar popping noise, so I lowered the spare tire, repositioned and coiled the extra chain and have not heard the noise since. A friend of mine asked me to check his Xterra out, said he heard a banging noise whenever he made a right turn had checked his exhaust brackets and all was OK. After riding in the Xterra, I verified his story. I don't know what made me look under the seat but I found a half empty bottle of Snapple ice-tea that was rolling and hitting the seat frame every time he made a right turn. Always check for the easy and obvious before tearing into mechanical components like shocks and suspension. Just my $.02

Re: Need help with a popping noise.

Are you positive it's coming from the front end?
For sh*ts and giggles, check you rear shakles. Sounds like the same noise I had until the shakle totally broke and the spring flew up and put a nice dent on the inside of my bed.
the weld on the shakle failed. I heard the noise for several weeks before it broke when I was wheeling, not hard but vary bouncy.
I looked at those brakets at least 10x trying to find that noise. Make sure you look close.

if you have a 2.5" leveling kit on it and its 4wd its your upper arm hitting your coil bucket

I get the same sound going over speed bumps. Can't figure it out either. Had it before and after 2" lift.

I have the 2" kit and my control arms hit the coil bucket, you can see the scars it has left on them

hey army titan you have a 2" spacer and you still hit coil bucket? i thought a 2" would fix that problem. i have a 2.5" and hit. Is there any way to prevent the a arm coil bucket connection. i dont off road on a daily basis but when i do do i just cruise slowly so i rarely top out my suspension. so im not to worried about getting a 2". the 2.5" is just a little higher which i like as well

Re: Need help with a popping noise.

My front end bangs and clangs like crazy. People comment on it every time they get in my truck. I have a 2.5" cheep ebay leveling kit that I installed last week but it's always made the noises. I don't drive hard either, this just happens while driving down the normal roads in my city, which are in pretty rough shape lately. It even clangs when the wheels drop down over the other side of a 2" high speed bump going about 10m/h. I've had it into an alignment shop and they found nothing lose or warn. If anyone knows of a way to fix/improve this issue, I'm all ears!
