28 gallon fuel tank

im starting to wonder if the titan can really hold 28gal . ive tried several times to pump 27-28 gals of gas but i only seem to be able to get 22max .

ive ran the titan for several miles with the needle way past E . the onbord fuel economy gauge states i have ***** miles to go befor empy . ive driven it for a while after that point . go to fill up and only manage 22gal .??

its not a big problem or anything that bothers me . just been in a couple times ive ran it donw to see if the tank could hold the 28 advertised ?

maybe nissan puts a buffer zone befor the truck shuts down completly after reading E ..

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

Just due to different circumstances i ran way lower than I like....... Approx 8 miles after the fuel light came on I put 26.7 Gal in my tank... Way to close for my comfort...... Only 330 Miles on the tank....

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

The gas guage is whats wrong...not the tank. The guage should be telling you it's 1/4 full when it says empty in most trucks.

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

The most I have ever put in the tank was 26 gallons and that was going another 35 miles with the fuel light on. What kills me is the first 1/4 tank I get 90-100 miles then it drops to 80 miles per 1/4 (roughly)

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

The gauge is not, and never has been, a calibrated scientifically correct device. It is an "indicator", just to tell you it is time to fill up. My light comes on with 4 gallons left. Miles per 1/4 tank is a useless measurement, only determine mileage at fillup. Nothing else for the consumer, offers any accuracy.

If you could put 28 gallons in (why is that your goal?), you would be empty and stranded. I'd chose other goals. Like HP increases. They are much more fun.

Wow...that's pretty bad mileage (12.3 mpg). Do you drive all-city or all-floored? Or do you drive all-city and all-floored?

I'm consistently getting 14.5 with normal blended driving and have gotten as good as 17 on a couple of all-highwiay tanks on long trips. The highway tanks included a load of coolers with food, scuba tanks and pulling a jetski.

I filled up this morning and got 14.39 on the last tank.

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

Do you guys think this is normal. Sometimes my indicator light goes on, i ignore it depending of where im at, and if i turn off the car and restart it, it goes off, the gas needle will sometimes read higher. I have also noticed, at least in my truck, that the second part of half a tank burns way faster i never have figured out why. Specially once u hit the half mark. That needle seems to drop from half full to quarter full in a heartbeat.

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

One other thing to consider, is that you don't want your fuel pump sucking off the bottom of the nearly empty tank. That leads to shortness of life on the pumps. The residual fuel in there also serves to cool the pump.

Depending on the year truck, there was a TSB for the sending unit that works the fuel guage. But yeah, even with the new sending unit, the guage never worked like most other vehicles I've owned.

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

its not a goal for me to get 28gal of gas filled . its just i was wondering why after driving for a long period of time with the needel clearly below E , the truck would only take in 22gals .. i know all fuel guages are inaccurate and just used to alert when you need gas .

im currently getting 16-17 city and 18ish highway . a tip on getting good gas milage is using the cruise control . and drive 40mph in the city or light to light . ive noticed that when i drive on the freeway with out the cruise control , the gas usage bar ** jumps up and down from 20 to 10 . but when i just set cruise for 80mph the bar stays dead set on 20-22mpg .

** on my LE with navigation i can select a option to see how many miles to empy and avarage mpg im getting . on that same screen i can see in relation to throttle input how much gas im using . its like a bar graph .

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

The fuel gauge indicates the position of the float in the fuel tank. The float indicates the LEVEL of the fuel in the tank and not the volume. Due to the irregular shape of the tank, when the level of fuel is say half way up in the tank, it does not necessarily mean that there are 14 gallons of fuel remaining.

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

I have the same problem so I took it to the dealer. They said it was the sending unit and will put a new one in next week. Apparently the sending unit and pump are attached so they have to replace them both. If you are still under warranty take it in. Because if that thing craps out, you know it will be a crap load of money to fix it.

Re: 28 gallon fuel tank

I don't think I have ever pumped over 23 gallons and was kind of wondering the same thing. I have driven for a day or so with the light on. Easy for me to do since I only work 6 miles from the house.

I think they just have a big buffer in there since the truck only get between 10-15 miles per gallon. Give you about 40 miles or so to get to a station.
