4wd trouble

I have a 2004 crew cab 4x4 se, and after driving down a muddy dirt road, I noticed that I could not put the truck in 4wd while I was moving. It make an awful griding noise. The mud was not too bad. I can stop and put it in 4wd but not when I am moving. I also installed the prg 2" leveling kit. If I take this to the dealer will they void the warranty??

Re: 4wd trouble

I'm not sure what to tell ya. Have you used 4wd in your Titan before?
If you use it all the time or even just often and this is out of the ordinary than yeah something could be wrong. Any warning lights?

When going in and out of 4wd it is recommended to drive straight and at a steady speed, not slowing down or accelerating.

Re: 4wd trouble

I have used 4wd many times in worse situations than that one with no problems. It was just out of the blue.

Re: 4wd trouble

I always engage mine while driving, but never while accelerating, not sure if that helps.

The service manual explains how to do a self-diagnostic procedure w/o Consult II.

Re: 4wd trouble

It happens when I go from 2wd to 4 hi. I am mainly scared that they will void the warranty due to the leveling kit. We all know how picky those dealers are..

Re: 4wd trouble

I dont see how the lift would void the warr. Raise cane if they say it does.

Re: 4wd trouble

They can not legally void your warrantee for anything that can not be proven to be the cause. Take it in and get it looked at.

Re: 4wd trouble

I know what your talking about. Here is one of my old posts...
Problems with Four wheel drive

When the ABLS is kicking in and one and you switch to 4hi on the fly, you will get some grinding noises. I have noticed it in my 04' as well as my 05', so I am pretty sure my service tech was right by saying this is normal. Like I said though, it has to be when teh ABLS is engaged for this to happen.
As far as the malfuction light on my 04', that was never solved. Had nothing to do with the grinding I posted about.

Re: 4wd trouble

should you only put it into 4 hi when moving? How about taking it out of 4hi?

You can shift into or out of 4 high while sitting still it may not shift out of four wheel mode untill you are moving though. You can also shift into or out of 4 high at speeds up to 62.5 mph. [shift on the fly capability] You have to be stopped to shift into 4 low though. To shift into 4 low You have to 1. stop 2. move the transmission selector to neutral 3. depress the brake pedal 4. shift to 4low.

Great reply! thanks much. I didn't see such details in our manual.

Is there a speed you shouldn't exceed when in 4hi or 4lo?

4 LO max speed is approximately 31 MPH. 4 HI speeds over 62.5 MPH are not recomended.
