Remote release for bedside box???

I'm thinking it would be nice to push a little button inside the truck and release the bedside box door without having to screw with taking the key out of the ignition and unlock the box. Electronics is definitely not my thing, but it would seem an electronic trunk release button should work???

Has anybody done this? Any tips or leads?

I've searched and found somebody else asking the same question back in '05 but no replies from anybody doing it. Hoping somebody has done it by now or that the question will push somebody smarter than me to figure out how to do it and teach me!

Re: Remote release for bedside box???

Not electronicaly but one guy rigged a cable where he can pull it from inside his bed to release the storage box door.

I just went out and took a look, with the locking mechanism being mounted to the door I didn't see alot of room to mount a solenoid. You can still do it, just will take some work.

Re: Remote release for bedside box???

Cable's cool - especially to a guy that doesn't get electronics. (wasn't a solenoid one of the bad guys in Star Wars???)

Any info available on how/what??? I wonder if the cable is a standard item from a parts store - I would think you'd want a cable inside a housing...hmmm I wonder if a bike cable would be strong enough... Thanks for the feedback and idea!

Re: Remote release for bedside box???

Great link - thanks!

And that's a way simpler answer than I was picturing. Would still have to decide about access from inside the cab or outside. And I hadn't thought about having to have enough cable to extend the amount the door opens - that requires an equally long pull on the other end...

Re: Remote release for bedside box???

I would like to see something like on old cars that had a push button for the glove box. The push button had a key slot that when turned would lock the button and prevent it from being pushed in. IN the unlocked position, pushing the button would release the latch. It would provide security and convenience without the complexity of electrical wiring or cable being in the way.
