My AC sounds like its constantly on. So I tried to sit at warm idle and turn the AC on and I cant hear it click on, like I usually do. The Its been between 10-26 degrees here the past few days I've noticed this. Is this normal, to keep the compressor from locking up or keep the coolant circulating, maybe after the temp drops so far? Thats why the ac compressor comes on during defrost, right? The dial is not on defrost, and the AC is on cool and button pushed on, but I dont hear it clicking... Could that be because its already on? It sounds like a whinning as soon as I start the truck and goes on and off intermittantly.

You wont hear it come on, just watch your rpms drop alittle. If the defrost is on the ac is on

I did all this without wife knowing
if recircr is on the compressor will likely be on as well.
if you have it set on dehumidify, it will also come on. in the cold weather, it just dehumidifies, doesn't actually cool the air. not sure that actually makes and actual difference in the way it operates. hvac is not my trade

Its not on defrost...I'm sure. its also not on recirc, sure of that too. The rpm's dont drop like they always have any other time I've turned it on. my main concern is cause I avg. 9.28 MPG this last fill up(driving conservative). Was avg 13ish. You can tell when you turn the AC on. I'm getting no change in the RPM, and at idle you can hear a "click" when it engages. I cant. So I assume its already on.

Generally a lurker here, but this sounds familiar. I took my truck to the dealership for poor mpg and lacking power and they said my air conditioning compressor was stuck on all the time. They replaced it because I was under warranty. Maybe take it in to see what they say.

Your dealer is a dildeesimo then. Search this forum and you will see that once the AC is on, the compressor stays on until the truck is turned off. This is for a reason.

I'm way out of warranty anyway... So thats it. The first time I turn on the defrost, then the AC comes on.... then it stays on throughout my trip? Am I understanding this right?

I’m totally confused after reading this thread. I always have wondered about this as well. If I turn my middle button all the way to the right to melt the ice off my window my AC automatically comes on. Once I turn it off it stays off, but I’ve never had another vehicle that did that. There’s been more than one occasion that I catch myself driving with the AC on and it’s 10 degrees outside. In my mind if I have the temp knob turned to max heat and I turn my location knob to the windshield my AC shouldn’t be coming on.

yes, been talked about a lot on here.

Yep it was in my 04's manual. Compressor runs continuously if you ever switch to defrost, until you turn off your switch(ignition).I always try to make sure my selector is not on defrost unless I need to defog.
