does anyone know if the porter cable 7424 and the 7336 sp are the same thing? the 7636 includes a sanding disk and polishing pad and is cheaper at my local tool store ( 125)

I would check out auto detailing solutions dot c o m, they have this machine and going through them it carries a LIFETIME WARRANTY, no questions asked, free replacement. I got mine from them as well as all my supplies for detailing. I detail on my days off from being a firefighter and this machine has made serious $$$ for me and keeps my Titan looking like it just came off the lot. They have deals where you get the machine and the needed pads in a package deal. Here are some pics of my 04 Titan after being detailed. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/101_0300.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/d5206fb8.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/ae8bcfa3.jpg

I did a quick search on one of the detailing sites I'm affiliated with and found this
PC 7336 (considered a sander) 1 yr warranty, 6 oz counterweight
PC 7424 (considered a polisher) 1 yr warranty 5 oz counterweight
Both come with white pad (not to be used for auto applications) and does not include a backing plate
G100 (Meguiars version) Lifetime Warranty 5 oz couterweight, comes with 1 velcro backing plate, and one detailing buffing pad (usually an 8006 to be used for general purpose applications (heavy-medium grit polishing/paint cleaning, swirl/scratch removal ect...)
All 3 units are basically the same other than the warranty, counterweights, backing plates/pads included.
i believe the REAL difference is "dual action" vs "random orbit." although both work, d/a tends to not induce more swirling nor burn the paint at the hands of an amateur. also, most auto detailing websites feature the 7424 dual action polisher so i would stick with this model. although i haven't used mine, my buddy did use his and it made a major improvement to his vehicle! just get the correct pads and products.

all three of the above models are DAs. A random orbit would be the style of buffer with the 2 handles on top that is primarily used for applying and removing wax. All they do is go around and around, no up and down, side to side movement hence they are not used for paint defect removal.
Mario, if you are looking for a machine to improve your paint: swirl removal, light scratch removal, cleaning paint, ease of applying wax with better uniformity and its removal then a DA like the ones mentioned here are what you need. If you are only interested in putting on wax and removing it, an orbital is all you need.
TIsTan was correct- you need to make sure you get the correct pads and products. PM me w/ what you are wanting to do and I'll be glad to assist you in some recommendations for products and pads selections to get the results you are looking for.
Also, these PC DA's will not allow you to inflict damage to your paint as say a rotary will. The gears and motor are designed so that if you apply to much pressure, it just bogs down. You can sit in one spot with the pads oscilating and the PC is not aggressive enough to damage the paint. You can get some "micro-marring" from using the incorrect pad and working the product for too long though.
