Question Need help on Brake decision

I posted this in the brakes/wheels/tires forum, but not much traffic there...

So, my brakes are starting to squeak (I think front) and I figure I need to get new pads and have the rotors turned. I called the local dealership and was quoted around $300. That seemed too high, so I checked Pep Boys. $145 with ceramic pads and rotors turned. Is it "safe" to go this route? I'm on a tight budget.

Thanks!

Re: Need help on Brake decision

If your rotors aren't glazed, don't turn them. Just replace the pads. The the rotors are that bad, replace them. I find that if I am having a problem with a rotor, turning them may eliviate the problem for a short while, but it is money that could be applied towards new rotors. I really don't have luck with turned rotors and I don't waste my money turning them anymore.

I'm with MH on this one, although $145 including labor isn't bad. New stock rotors are about $93 each & pads $75 for the fronts, I think. So $275 plus an hour to put them on. You can get better rotors & pads aftermarket (slotted/slotted & drilled/ cryo)

Have you had the front recall done? If not, I would take it in to the dealer and have them replace it all under the recall. If that doesnt work, then I would go after some Ceramic pads and slotted rotors.

Yeah, I had the recall done moons ago. Right now, I can't afford new rotors, though it would be nice. Just want to get rid of the squeak!

What year is the truck. The 04's are covered for life of the truck. This is in response to the horrible problems they had the first year. I suppose Nissan won't honor this if the truck is bought used.

I just read that you have an 04. Dude the brake problem is covered for the life of the vehicle. This was the response to the screwed up problems. This should not cost you one nickle!!!!

Re: Need help on Brake decision

I thought the brake fix was three years unlimited mileage from the date of the repair?

Re: Need help on Brake decision

Yes, the brake judder is covered for a few more years, but I don't have the judder. Anyway, my uncle is a west coast VP for a company who manufactures and distributes parts (I don't really want to say the name, but it's HUGE!). He just ordered me up some front and rear ceramic pads - oem specs. I'll pay the corner garage $50 for turning and install.
