Re: How Many Catalytic Coverters

I may be wrong but I heard somewhere that the Crew Cabs only have one Cat, but the King Cab's have two. Doesn't make sense to me but that is what I heard.

Re: How Many Catalytic Coverters

If you have a 4X4, simply punch out the insides of the rear cats. You'll have a more free-flowing exhaust, although you'll probably have more drone in the truck.

Yeah that's it. I knew there was a difference but couldn't remember what it was.

Thanks for clearing it up.

Re: How Many Catalytic Coverters

talking about cats reminds me of my buddy last week... who got his 2006 Fronty's cat stolen. weird. somebody sawed off his cat... and when he started it.. the truck sounded like a helipcopter. lol. it's crazy, i tell you.

then reading on some forums the other day... i found out that meth heads were taking cats and selling it to recycling shops, just so they can buy more drugs. anyways... just thought i'd let you folks know. sorry about the off topic.

Re: How Many Catalytic Coverters

There are manifold catalysts and underbody cats. The mani-cats are three-way catalysts which are doing 95% of the work. They're lighting off unburned hydrocarbons and converting the majority of the NOx. The underbody cats catch what the mani-cats don't and are there to compensate for the mani-cats as they age. In general, you won't see much more than 2-3 hp improvement in removing the underbody cats. The brick has a fairly high cell count and is very short.

Be careful if you're punching out the catalyst ceramic brick and support mats. The bricks are coated with heavy metals (rhodium, platinum, etc.) and the mats can release respirable fibers that can get lodged in your lungs (much like asbestos).
