Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

Skeet, firecracker, jaho, myself and a few others have been discussing tailpipe length and drone relationship. This past Saturday, I cut the last 12" of stock tailpipe off to see if drone was reduced. I can happily say the inside cab drone decibel level was reduced by 30-50%. Pics and before and after videos are below.

Watch the RPM's in the second video, this was recorded using the same camera and windows up, just like the first one. To me it was hard to tell much of a difference just by listening to the two videos. Was the drone raised to a different RPM range? No, it was not, but noticeably reduced in sound level.

Re: Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

Yeah, it's hard to tell much by the videos. I have the Magnaflow catback, and I'd love to be able to cut my noise level in the cab too, but keep it raunchy outside (o, and keep my tip too).

Re: Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

If anyone cuts their tailpipe, just make sure it doesn't directly blow on any electrical harness or nearby component. The shorter tailpipe really does help reduce drone levels inside the cab.

yep, or you might get stuck with a $600 repair bill for a burnt wiring harness! (skeet!)

Re: Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

Here's a new video of the 18" Magnaflow with the shorter tailpipe, just some revs. It sounds a tad bit mellower and deeper than with the full length OEM tailpipe. The older rev video is still in my signature.

Re: Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

What will cutting off the last turn do? It would then exit to the side instead of the rear.

No, it still exits in the rear just 12" shorter. You can see the pipe in the video, upper left. The drone resonation was reduced by 35-50% with that 12
cut.

Re: Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

So the trail pipe makes the exhaust louder? I always thought it muffled out the sound...

Re: Drone reduction with shorter tailpipe.

I kinda wish the banks exited in front of the rear wheel....I've always like that look. I know it's not practical...well is it even possible? Maybe a sweep coming right out of the muffler...hmmmmmmm I'll have to take a look tomorrow.

I've got to replace a few exhaust gaskets anyway might as well see how everything lines up under there...
