Change your front diff fluid!

Just changed my front and rear diff fluids today (M1 75w-90 abd M1 75w-140), was the first time for the front and the second time for the rear (I'm at 31k miles). I changed the rear fluid at 5k but wasn't concerned about the front because I was under the impression that the front diff only spun when in 4wd. Well to my dismay I was informed that the front diff spins all the time, oops. Sooooo changed that today. The sludge, errr fluid was pretty gross in both diffs, glad I got around to changing them.

Well just a heads up cause I figure a lot of people were probably under the same impression about the front diff that I was.

Re: Change your front diff fluid!

I changed my front for the first time at 35K and it looked pretty good. I put full syn in both front and rear. the rear was nasty, it had been changed once already.

What brand of lube did you use? I hear that Royal Purple stuff is good.

Re: Change your front diff fluid!

Replaced the fluids in the rear diff at 29K......comparing the fluid colors..old fluid.....dark brown...the new fluid....light yellow. Big difference. It says on the diff cover.....75W-140W Synthetic only. 06 diff's take 2.25 quarts.

Does it matter? By warranty the vehicle must be serviced through NISSAN. Very little choice in the matter? Or am I misinformed?

Nissan does not have to do the services, as long as they are done.

Re: Change your front diff fluid!

Chris how many bottles of gear lube did the diffs take each. I am at the 30K mark and need to change them. Nissan for some reason didn't list that in my manual, says to see dealer. FT!!! PIA!!!

Thanks

Re: Change your front diff fluid!

Front took maybe 1.5-1.7 quarts and the rear took around 2.25.

You know the drill....first drain the old stuff out.....and fill them up until they start to over flow then just plug em up....takes less than 30 minutes...thats draining and filling all together.

Re: Change your front diff fluid!

Re: Change your front diff fluid!

Unless there is a lot of metal in it I wouldn't flush it. And if there is a lot of metal in it you might want to show the dealer.
