My neighbor was up after 2 AM last night and saw an Oldsmobile cruising my house looking hard at my truck. They drove by 3 or 4 times and stopped in front of my neighbors Ram a few doors down. Some punk jumped out and tried all the doors to the Ram before hopping back in the car and hurrying off.
Neighbor couldn't get outside in time to get a plate number, but suffice to say, someone wants my truck.
So, I need help. I know crap about alarms or how to protect my truck. I know it has the factory ignition system that supposedly won't start without a programmed key.
I also know that if someone wants your vehicle, they're going to get it. I'm not worried about a professional thief, just some punk who would steal it, drive it like crazy for a few days and probably wreck it.
I need advice on how to protect my truck. I know there's LoJack, The Club, ignition kill switches, alarms, etc.
Anyone got advice on how I can best protect my truck from the casual car thief? Truck cost $40K and there's another $10K in it, so I'm not afraid of spending money to protect it.
It is lifted with a roof rack so it can't fit in the garage. On the other hand, I don't drive it all that often, so is there a fuse or something I can pull or something simple like that which would prevent it from being taken easily?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
John

Does it have an alarm from the factory, or did they not put them in on the 05s? If it's a quite neighborhood, as soon as the alarm sounds at 2am they will beat feet out of there...as long as it's only punk @ss kids. If you don't drive it often, I would definitly get a club. Don't leave anything in the truck in plain site.

Kind of like a house alarm. Assuming you have the Keyless entry. I would test out the "panic" button on your remote a couple times a day. More towards evening time. Even pushing lock to get the horn chirp a couple times a day would bring attention to your truck having a theft deterent system installed. Alert the local PD of your findings. But make sure you exagurate a bit. Ask for a patrol unit to "drive by" a couple times a night. I would also install a motion detected light to illuminate the truck as best as possible if someone gets near it.
But the best thing you can do is to install an alarm. Many alarm companys offer great options to try and stop thieves. Look into one with a backup battery, Fail-safe starter kill. Some even have *onstar capabilities such as vehicle tracking, or you can call an 800# and get your doors unlocked, They can call and alert you of a possible break in. A whole world of options are out there.

I bought a motion sensing thing that I put outside pointed at my truck. When it is activated, it triggers a doorbell type chime inside to let me know. That way, I can go outside and deal with it myself.

As already stated, if its just a couple of stupid kids, they probably aren't after your truck, they are after what's inside. The biggest thing is to hide things, or not keep them in your truck, and make sure your doors are locked. In my area we have a group that is stealing change! That's right, they've left radar detectors, cd cases, and other valuable things, and just take the change from unlocked cars. Bunch of morons! The motion light on the house toward the truck will run them off at least once, so not a bad investment either!

You have two choices in life:
You can stay single and be miserable,
or get married and wish you were dead.
Good ideas. Yes, the truck is always locked and aside from loose change and some country music CD's, the ony other thing in the truck is my sons car seat.
One thing I thought of was to call Geico and make sure all my aftermarket add ons were covered under my insurance. They weren't because I had never added them as I put them on the truck.
They're on the policy effective immediately. I itemized close to $10,000 worth of stuff and it cost me $77 every six months to have it all added. Not bad, though that is depreciated coverage. No other option.
I like the idea of the motion sensor light pointed at the truck. My neighbors stupid cat would probably set it off all the time though. I live in a very nice, quiet neighborhood, but that is no guarantee of anything.
I just may have Lo-Jack installed. Anyone know if the cops in SoCal have the trackers in their vehicles?
Keep the good ideas coming!!
Regards,
John
