My Titan has a blown rear axle seal

Went in to the dealer at 9am to get my engine oil changed this morning and asked them to check everything out since I was going to NM (1000 miles one-way), and they changed my oil and said everything was fine..About an hour before I was going to leave to NM, I went to look under my truck to do a quick visual inspection. I found THIS!!!!

ARGH!!!!!

Anyways, had to take it to a different dealer since the other one was farther away and traffic would have been a biatch...I think if I drove the 2000 mile trip, I'm sure my diff would have leaked completely and blew...The manager of the new dealership was very helpful, and got me a rental for me for my trip! They prepaid $250, so it should cover my entire rental car bill. I'm in a Pontiac G6 for the next week now! They tried to get me in a F150, but I told them NO WAY!!

Alright, I'm off to New Mexico now to go skiing..See ya later!

Re: My Titan has a blown rear axle seal

I took my newest truck in to for the air bag light flashing this past Wednesday, quickest I have ever been in and out of the dealer. They only had the truck 30 minutes. When I was signing off on the work I just happen to get a good look under the truck and see my left axle seal was leaking. They gave me a 2005 Altima and said it would be done by 5pm.

Moral of the story:

Everyone go check your rear axle seals by the wheels!

Re: My Titan has a blown rear axle seal

Mine started at ~42,000 miles, covered under the powertrain warranty. There was a stress crack in the seal assembly.

Re: My Titan has a blown rear axle seal

hhmmm.. stress crack? is it a crack in the seal? (bad batch) or a crack in what the seal is trying to seal?? may be bearing wear creating axle mvmt/runout..

just curious.

I wish I could have seen what they were talking about. The evidence was long gone by the time I picked up the truck. My leak started right at the end of the hunting season. I do a lot of low maintenance dirt road and field driving but who knows maybe it was just a bad part...

They are just replacing the seals and a few other small parts...The diff fluid is still pretty high so no damage likely done to the diff.

Re: My Titan has a blown rear axle seal

No they are just replacing the seals now I had mine replaced at 10k havnt had a prob since. Tech was pissed too because the bearing is pressed to the axle and they didnt have the right tool to get it off so he had to improvise I think nissan paid something like 11/2 hours for the job and he logged almost 8hrs dohh.

Re: My Titan has a blown rear axle seal

Most dealerships are not equipt to replace axle seals and such so they either ship the axle out to have repaired at a local shop or the replace the axle. Mine was shipped off to a local place and done the same day.
