I was a member of TT a while back under a different name I decided when I got my new internet connection I would come back to the source that had me so excited about my truck when it was new. The reason being is because I have been considering a change lately and I am just torn because on one hand I do love the truck, on the other hand it is not needed anymore and with the old lady getting an 07 camry I am thinking of climbing into a 4 door sedan myself with the gas prices climbing up there again even went so far as to go test drive some stuff. I guess all I am really wondering is any of you consider doing the same and what kept you from it.
The cheapest ride is the one you already own. You will not save money in the next 5 years by selling what you have (Paid for, or at least in great part) and starting with paying for another vehicle. The fuel is just one part of the cost of a vehicle. Payments and depreciation are far greater. Changing to a car won't make up the differance.
Consider again why you bought a truck in the first place. For me it was interior room, open bed, winter traction, overall versatility, height advantage for view and safety for the family in an accident. Those qualities haven't gone away. I don't like 50-60 bucks for gas each week, but I feel priveledged to be able to have the truck I do, and feel confident I bought it for many good reasons. I've always had compact vehicles, and believe if there is a time in my life to own a full size, it is now as I raise my children. Even my wife said nice things about it after last years driving tour of the South.
Nope, can't change to save money, it just looks that way. It will cost me as I enjoy this truck as a great hobby, never felt that way about any other vehicle I've owned. Really like the Titan, Love the Family.

The only sedans I would drive don't get much better than the Titan, so no sense in changing. I don't care for anything that isn't considered a Sports sedan, which means larger motor which leads to aggressive driving.......an lots of it to get the same level of testosterone as just poking around in the Titan.

Nothing like a 4 door sedan with a bed, and a 5.6L Engine!! LOL

For a number of years people have purchased trucks with no traditional need for a truck (towing, hauling, etc.). They were used such as you would a car, just every day driving to work, etc. The rising gas prices over the last couple of years and especially last years $3 plus gallon of gas is putting an end to that. Thus, large SUV and truck sales are slow. Personally, I traded in my wife's2004 GMC Yukon last year for a 2006 Nissan Murano SUV (24/19 mpg). Based on the prediction that gas was and is going to be $3 a gallon on a regular basis, I then traded in my 2004 Sierra for an '06 Saturn Vue SUV (25/19 mpg). The Saturn was short-lived as my purchase of a large boat required a full-size truck to tow the weight. I sold the Saturn and recently purchased an '07 Titan. So, I've made the full circle. But yes, I have sold a truck for a more fuel efficient vehicle, as are several other people that I know.
Im like Titan814. Im just a truck guy. I dont use it as a work truck. My last 4 vehicles were trucks. I just couldnt see myself not having a truck. I like the outdoors too much I guess.

If it's really a question of saving money, why not buy some beater econo-box for $1500 or so, put the basic insurance that you need, and drive the fool out of that whenever you need to be frugal, drive the Titan when you want to feel powerful and/or actually need to,and use the Camry for the family outings? Just my $.02.

I think everybody is tempted by the idea of a new car every once in a while. Just driving the truck every day keeps me from seriously considering it. I love my truck!

Gotta do what you gotta do! I love my Titan, and I'm also part owner of a toy hauler that I can't tow! Yeah, I'd love to step up to a diesel, but I the other owner has a diesel dually...and for now I just can't part with the Titan!
There are some great cars out there that do get good mileage. If there is a car you really want, go for it and do what makes you happy! But just like TitanBlue said, there's a lot to consider before you are actually saving any money!

I've got to say, seeing the $3.00+ gallon of gas, coupled w/ my 10mpg titan on 35" tires has me saying "damn, i gotta get gas again? Maybe I should downgrade..."
then i think of upside down costs, and that alone would cost more than the gas i put into my truck. That being said, as others stated, gas is part of ownership. There's no way around it. The only trade that would make any sort of sense is a hybrid, and i really don't think it would be worth it to trade a truck for a hybrid...there's no practicality to it unless you drive 75+ miles every day.
As another stated, just buy an econobox Civic, and use that for point A to point B driving
Even buying an econobox isn't going to save that much. Consider this example:
Driving 20,000 miles/year (national avg. is closer to 12,000)
Average $2.80 /gallon (this is the actual average price I have paid in Sacramento over the past year)
My Titan has averaged 15 mpg over the past year
If I bought an old econobox beater to drive that averaged 30 mpg (I doubt that I could find an old beater that gets better, 30 might even be optomistic) I could only save $1866/year and that would be if I NEVER drove my Titan, my actual gas saving would be less. Then when you consider any car you get for less than $2000 is going to start needing maintence to keep it running, additional insurance, licensing, smog certification, etc, etc. The savings start disappearing fast.
