Front Differential and 4x4 issue. need answers

I went in to get my oil changed today and they tell me that my Front Differential is leaking. The truck goes into Nissan tomorrow morning to have them look at the Four Wheel drive. The only way to get 4x4 to disengadge is to put it in reverse and back up 10-15 feet. Do these 2 things have anything to do with each other? This isnt the making of a rear end failer is it? I dont know too much about trucks rear ends or 4x4's. lol I just let other ppl fix the problem. Im just looking to see what i should be looking forward too. lol Thanks for any help or answers

You shouldn't have to back up for get out of 4WD. It's not that kind of system. And no, the front diff has nothing to do with the rear diffs. You probably have either a leaky seal, or a drain plug that's not tight enough. Neither one is cause for worry. Have the dealer fix the leak and make sure it's properly filled.

Re: Front Differential and 4x4 issue. need answers

Thanks for the help, I took it too the dealer and the ordered a bunch of hoses and clamps and things like that. They told me that since mine was an 04 nissan didnt take into account for that fact that some places put salt on the road in the winter. The salt I guess eats away at a hose dealing w/ the transmission. Has anyone heard of this? One of my friends just lost his transmission because his hose rotted out and drop the fluid. $6,600 for a new one. This was one of the reasons I took mine to get looked at.

Re: Front Differential and 4x4 issue. need answers

I do not understand. The only hose going to the front diff, AFAIK, is the vent line. I don't think that any hose problem has anything to do with a front diff leak.

I am also somewhat skeptical that Nissan didn't know in 2004 that people drive cars on salted roads, as I have been doing that for 30+ years.

Re: Front Differential and 4x4 issue. need answers

I am just stating what the Service Dept. told me. The hose doesn't have anything to do w/ the front differential, it has something to do with the Transmission. They are just replacing it because it looked warn. I really don't care what they do as long as it fix's the problem and my truck doesn't break. They could tell me all sorts of thing and I wouldn't have a clue to what they did. The only thing I like is 2 of my really good friends are mechanics at Nissan and they explain what was done to my truck with like a picture book lol.

Re: Front Differential and 4x4 issue. need answers

There is a TSB for the tranny cooler hoses. I completely understand that part. Basically the hose has crappy clamps.

But how does that have anything to do with (1) leaking front diff or (2) shifting into or out of 4wd ? Or maybe they have not yet advised you on that issue?

I had my front diff replaced (well known problem with C-clip axle pulling out.) After replacement, I now have to shift into R (as you describe) to get out of 4Hi. With the original diff, it shifted out of 4Hi reliably on the fly.
