Nissan would probably be interested in looking into this, as it appears to be a mostly frontal impact. Call the dealer, then regional or national office. They may want to retrieve the black box and inspect the vehicle. Collisions do provide a major source for the safety programs.

Call a lawyer. Unless there is one on this forum that knows about a case like this and can help you directly, everything is hearsay.

Re: need help, what do i do about the airbags that did not go off in wreck

At that speed there's a good chance that Nissan will say that they shouldn't have gone off. My last vehicle was an 02 Dakota Crew 4x4 and an illegal immigrant "helped" me to get a Titan by pulling out in front of me. I was going approx 45-50 mph hit him square in the side of the old F-150 he was driving and my airbags didn't go off even though the impact was enough to bang my knees against the dash. I sent an inquiry with lots of pictures to Dodge, and they said that the crumple zones in the front of the truck simply did what they were supposed to do and absorbed most of the impact. Not saying that something didn't go wrong here or you shouldn't go to Nissan with it, but just wanted to throw in my $0.02. Good luck with it!

Re: need help, what do i do about the airbags that did not go off in wreck

I'd get in touch with Nissan as soon as possible.

I'm no expert on airbags, but I've been on a LOT car accidents (firefighter for an area with highest # fatalities in our county). I've seen the airbags go off with less damage, and not go off with more damage than you had. There's a LOT involved in their deployment (speed, angle, yaw, etc), and it very well may be they should not have gone off for that accident depending on all factors.
That said, it's definately worth looking into with Nissan. Even if the SUV is fixed, doesn't mean if theres a faulty part that it will be.

I 2nd dawgbone and hope she was/is okay.

Re: need help, what do i do about the airbags that did not go off in wreck

Looks like the impact was to the side and not head on. It looks like it hit the one way in which neither front or side impact air bags wouldn't deploy.

But I agree call Nissan (1-800-Nissan-1) and escalate the call... Don't stop until you speak to a supervisor.

Sorry to hear she was hurt...

Take a look at the frame where the engine mounts are. The engine is designed to move down and back during impact to keep it from pushing into the cab, so if it moved enough the frame will be bent at that spot. If that's the case there's a higher chance of it being totalled.

I would say its totaled. it doesnt take much for them to total a vehicle these days. I had a mazda protege with the rear wheel support bent and they totaled it! i couldnt believe it.

Im not sure what you hope to gain by calling nissan, probably a waste of time.

WTF????!!!! No airbag deployment? You have got to be kidding me. From what I see in the pictures, they should have gone off. If they are designed to not go under that damage I would be asking a big "Why Not?"

I am not sure as to what speed or compression factor they designed but it would almost make one think that they were not there. Good luck, hope it all works out for you.

Look at the bigger picture here.

For one thing, if the truck is repaired, you want to be certain the airbag system is fully functional, and or replaced. If that particular unit is repaired, I'd want new airbags put in anyways; it is too unsettling to see the airbags did not deploy. There are many variables in their extrememly sophisticated controls.

Secondly, as I stated above, the Mfgs gain a significant amount of information from crash data. This helps them fine tune the designs, learn of weaknesses or unexpected conditions in which the safety systems don't work well. We all may benefit from his following up on this.

Most importantly, if the system did not do what it should have, and long term health issues or financial loss is incurred, any basis for liability claims must be established with factual data and contact with the mfg. I would hope this dire situation does not occur. I want to have no doubts of my airbags working well.

Hopefully she will heal fine, be fully covered by insurance of the party at fault, and this just goes into Nissan records for historical data.

Re: need help, what do i do about the airbags that did not go off in wreck

Make sure they are even in the vehicle. I read somewhere that airbags fetch a pretty penny as a part for sale. Body shops, car repair and service places and even audio places were ripping off customers when the car was left with them. The owner never knew the air bag(s) were gone till an accident, then they had a hard time proving who took it.
