"thud" on quick acceleration

Sometimes, not always, when I get on the gas I hear a thud sound. And can feel it too in the floor boards. I have no idea what it is or why it is happening. Anyone have a similar experience?

Re: "thud" on quick acceleration

If you have the utilitrac the thud you are hearing would be the plastic covers sliding back and hitting the tailgate.

Re: "thud" on quick acceleration

Make sure the car in front of you goes before you do! That can cause one helluva thud! lol...sorry. The plastic covers may make some sound but I can't imagine a THUD from them. Check to make sure you don't have anything in the compartment behind the rear wheel or in the bed that may be causing it. There have been some with loose tranny bolts and various loose bolts underneath also.

My buddy had a thud. It was a loose transfer case mount.

Re: "thud" on quick acceleration

I read somewhere in the oweners manual about the anti-lock brakes making that noise and that it is supposed to be that way.

The anti-lock brakes do make a noise but he is hearing a "thud" when he is accelerating.

Correct.

And it's not all the time.

I did remove the rubber things that were slide into the utilitrack system and still had the thud. I need to go over the truck and make sure I don't have any crap stored anywhere that is rolling around.

Re: "thud" on quick acceleration

Axle wrap is the common answer here. Look up the Jettech Spring Mod done with placing a helper spring to the front and bottom of the rear leaf spring assembly. It greatly reduces the twisting of the axle assembly when torque is applied from accelerating and even stopping. It worked on mine very well.

I do have some spring helpers. I never noticed the thud before installing them. And it didn't happen until quite a few months after they were installed.

Are they applied as normal, or as for reducing axle wrap?

Since it is a new problem, I'd start looking for something loose then. A mechanic may find it quickly up on a lift.

Is there a difference? I just bought some hellwig traction springs and haven't installed them yet... I bought them to reduce axle wrap after the mini-lift and putting these heavy 22's on...

YES! Look up the "JetTech Spring Mod" for the instructions. Add an extra U bolt to hold the front in place more securely (Mod to the Mod, writtten up later in same thread IIRC). It will help a lot! And only cost about 30 bucks, acts like traction springs do, does not add load carrying ability.

Re: "thud" on quick acceleration

I have the same thing you are talking about. Everyone here and on other forums are telling me Axle wrap so i got some helper springs today ill see if that helps. But also under hard exeleration i get a grinding noise so ill be heading to the dealership to drop the truck off for a few days and see what they say that is... i think its my differential going out? im not sure though could be loose bolts i hope not.
