ok well..... im very skeptical i must admit, but i have to say nissan told me today they were shipping me a new motor, and it made me feel a little better, they told me they wasnt going to up my warranty or anything, but well..... i told the guy it would be on a carfax if i decided to sell it, and that my trade in value might go to crap, he simply couldnt reply to that...... i know i have been complaining a bit much as of late but i really do love my titan, will this little setback hurt my value? will it go on carfax?
Yes - and Yes. When they changed the engine under factory warranty on my wifes last Chevy Tahoe (1996) not only would the dealer who did the repair refuse to take it in trade on a new one - but with a major repair showing I had to get rid of it at a wholesale auction. No one else would allow me full value on a trade either. Fight for that extended warranty dude - and then drive it until it don't roll no more. Otherwise you are going to eat the depreciation.

Understood, but I don't understand.
Why would having a brand new 0-mileage motor decrease the value? - H3LL, you'd think that having anything brand new would increase value instead...especially something as important as an engine!
Now then, on the other hand, I own a Corvette, and fully understand the 'matching numbers' game...it was the first thing I did when I got my 'Vette - dropped the gas tank for the sticker, and realizing it wasn't there, I knew then that it was not a numbers matching car, so I customed it out all the way...but a numbers matching 'Vette will net thousands more than the same exact model with *anything* that didn't come with it from the factory.
BUT, why on a Titan? It's not like they're going to be collector's items in 20 years when they get their 'antiquity value' - how many of our models will still be around in 20 years?
If anyone can explain to me how having a new motor isn't beneficial to the entire truck, please do, 'cause I'd have a brand new one any day of the week (even though mine only just cleared 7,000 the other day) - it's still a *new* motor!
(Oh yeah, I'm not being combative or anything, I simply don't understand the mentality of Carfax and dealers that think a *new* motor is worse than an *old* one)

Simple answer - once it leaves the factory and some grease monkeys at the dealership do major operations such as a motor swap - the outcome is problematical. When my wifes 6 month old Chevy Tahoe - top of the line LE - had the engine changed it NEVER ran well ever again. Same for my 2001 911. Threw a rod with 4113 miles. Dealer "rebuilt" the engine to factory specs - ran like a dog - had to unload it out at the auctions. If it was not put in at the factory that built it - watch out! You will end up with all the "extra" parts the mechanic thought he did not need sitting in the spares box in a back room at the dealership. Hey - who really needs all those silly bolts and stuff holding things together anyway? And what about the "extra" parts - like the socket or nut dropped down inside somewhere clanking around driving you crazy that can never be located and removed? Had that happen on my 1989 Jeep Cherokee after it was stolen, wrecked, recovered and "repaired. Never went down the road straight again. Another loss. And all the work was done at the Jeep dealership as it was only 3 weeks old when taken from the Shea stadium valet parking lot. I have given up on owning any vehicle, no matter how expensive or low milage - once it has a major accident or repair. That is why carfax exists in the first place - so the next dude does not eat your misfortune without knowing what he is getting himself into. Just my opinion and personal experience. I am sure someone out their loves someone else's lemon and is getting good use from it. Me - I am not that lucky.

In 1998, my wifes brand new Chevy Cavalier seized with 500 miles on it. They replaced the motor, and nine years later it still was running great.

I agree. Carfax never shown that the Piece of crap car I had in 2000 had any problems. A main bearing threw and a rod blew and shattered the cam.. seized the whole thing up. And then after the new engine, the tranny smoked. After the tranny was replaced, the tranny control died. SO I will attest that the extended warranty or whatever you get with a used car is worth it because without it I would be stuck with a bill and no car.
BTW That car was a Ford Taurus and I traded it away as fast as I could when the problems gave me a minute to. Lol
