Parking brake...

I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been asked...
I have had my 2004 SE for 2 weeks now, I love it! I did take it back to the dealer to have them adjust the parking brake since I use mine all the time. They said there's so little adjustment built into it that they could only adjust it a little bit. Anything over a 5% slope and it wil roll with just the parking brake on... What can I do? Are they full of crap, or just live with it? I also noticed the rear seal must be just starting to weep... While they're there....

Re: Parking brake...

My parking brake will hold my truck in the driveway and I have a pretty steep driveway!! My street has a slope on it also, not near as bad, and my p-brake will hold both the truck and 3000+ lb boat in place. It will also hold it on a boat ramp!

When I got my truck, I complainef that the brake sucked and the manager got in, put it in nutral, pushed the brake to floor and tried to push the truck with his foot hanging out the door. Then said, "the brake works just fine.......see"

The proper way to adjust is involves removing the rim/tire or there is a 10mm adjustment above the p-brake pedal that can be tightened up.

Re: Parking brake...

Before trying to adjust anything, sometime the brake doesn't get burnished enough at the factory and wont hold. Try putting the brake on as much as you can and drive the truck a couple hundred yards, let it cool and see if that helped. This worked like a charm on mine

sure did not work on mine. I stoped using it because I kept driving off with it on. It sucks.

Re: Parking brake...

You really have to push mine in FAR to get it to work well. I have to slide down in the seat before I put it on. Make sure you push it all the way to the floor.

Re: Parking brake...

Mine works fine, always has. It seems as though this isn't an isolated incident though. Hope you guys can get things figured out.

Re: Parking brake...

it's a fine adjustment which if hooked up perfectly you will not be dragging your brakes. I messed with mine for a whole day and found I was either dragging my brakes or it would not hold the truck on a steep creek angle.

I use the transmission usually but if towing I drag my brakes so i can use my parking brake.

Re: Parking brake...

Since i did my truetrac i think i adjusted it and it doesnt work now unless completly to the floor. Is there an in line adjustmnt anywhere? There IS a nut you can spin in the hub if you pull off a rear wheel, unbolt the the brake caliper and slide the disc off. The star shaped nut should have yellow paint markings on it. You can adjust the spread of the drums

Re: Parking brake...

Mine would rollback on my Dad's driveway and it would BANG out of Park when I would go to backup. Having a parking brake that sucks htis bad is NOT acceptable...They charged me $75 to adjust it even though I was still in warranty. Works fine now.

There is a small hole (about 4-5mm across) that you can get the to star nut through, but its not easy or fun.

You can check this thread out.

Parking Brake Adjust.... How Do You Do It?

It helped me out but I think I have to crank it all the way to make it stay in my driveway.

Re: Parking brake...

Also, give the brake time to grab after you apply it. Let the truck roll a bit after you apply the brake. It'll grab, just not right away. It's worked like that on my truck. My wife was a little scared of it at first, but once she found that it works fine like that every time, she's been okay with it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Parking brake...

Mine worked but I had to push the pedalk all the way to the floor. I have a driveway that is about 6%. I rotated the wheels last weekend and tightened the adjuster a little bit before I put them back on. When I drove to town later that day, I could smell the brake shoes and was livid. I thought I would have to take them off again and screw witht he adjustment. After a couple of stops and about an hour later the smell went away and they work aven better than before.
