Need help identifying Leak

Hi guys,

I am on the road and I am pulling a trailer. I apparently developed a leak of fluid of some kind.. Its starting to splatter the rear of the truck and the trailer. It appears to be coming from a box just in front and above the rear differential on the drivers side. Differential is dry. Any one know whats in this box or what it does? I attached 2 pictures.

Thanks Pappy need-help-identifying-leak-nissan-trouble-006.jpg

Re: Need help identifying Leak

Sorry, but I've looked at that box many many times and I have no idea what it's for. Hopefully someone can enlighten us.

Re: Need help identifying Leak

I looks like it might be the evap canistor, part of the emmissions system. If I'm not mistaken gas fumes flow throuh there and are redirected to the engine. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. Have you overfilled your gas tank? Wipe some off and give it a smell. if not gas then I would check break lines and your diff again for leaks.

Is your truck a 4x4?
Look farther ahead.

Re: Need help identifying Leak

Subtitan,

Interesting , I have been topping the fuel tank off to the brim due to pulling the trailer out here in no mans land.. I would think if it was gas it would have evaporated but then again I don't know how that thing works.. I will investigate further.

Thanks Pappy

Re: Need help identifying Leak

Here is a quick discription of the system, if you have the service manual it's on page EC-612.

ON BOARD REFUELING VAPOR RECOVERY (ORVR)

From the beginning of refueling, the air and vapor inside the fuel tank go through refueling EVAP vapor cut valve and EVAP/ORVR line to the EVAP canister. The vapor is absorbed by the EVAP canister and the air is released to the atmosphere. When the refueling has reached the full level of the fuel tank, the refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is closed and refueling is stopped because of auto shut-off. The vapor which was absorbed by the EVAP canister is purged during driving.

Re: Need help identifying Leak

Update:

Went to a dealer in Denver yesterday (Empire).
Very nice folks.
They put it up on the rack and could find nothing wrong with the truck.
They could see the fluid but could not identify it or determine if it was coming from my truck.. No smell to the fluid or determining color.

They felt it was from another source or it could have been venting from the rear end. I asked where the vent was but they were not sure.

At any rate we trucked on through the rockies in to Utah and all seems to be OK.

I will just keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the help guys.

Pappy
