Gear lube question

What would be the best lube to go with and do you have to add in friction modifier for the LS differential? I am getting ready to change out my lube and would like to know which brand has the best oil rating or class whatever it is called, G4 or G5, something like that. Thanks for any input

Re: Gear lube question

The Titan doesn't have a Limited slip diff. so you don't have to worry about adding anything there. There are many good 75-140 synthetic oils on the market, just choose one you like. I use Mobile 1, many use Amsoil, Valvoline, Royal Purple etc. All those oils will usually be GL-5 rated.

I have Royal purple in the diff right now and was just trying to see if there is something better.

I have been having some oil consumption issues with Royal purple in both of my vehicles but they both have had cat failures so I am not sure if it is the oil itself or scored cylinders yet. My oil consumption test just finished up on the altima and it burned 2 quarts in a thousand miles so I want to see when I get my new motor here in the next week and get it broken in if the Royal Purple really holds up or not.

Re: Gear lube question

There was a thread recently on Royal Purple, search and see if you can find it.
If I remember right, some people swore by Royal Purple and others hated it. I have never used it so I don't have an opinion.
On the other hand, I use Mobile 1 and have had no problems in the diff. or the engine. If I were to guess, I would say that most people are using Mobile 1 or amsoil.

Re: Gear lube question

You would only have a LS Rear if you upgraded aftermarket to the Detroit Truetrac, in which case the answer is still no. No modofiers needed nor recommended. Use the M1 as listed above and it would fine.

Some have claimed RP did not hold viscosity, while M1 did, as you would expect any name brand oil to do.

Are you using Blackstone Labs or similiar service to do a Used Oil Analysis (UOA)? Cost is $22 per use (volume discount available). I do it each change, get results in a PDF just 3 or 4 days later via email. You seem do be having too many major oil problems here. Any unusual conditions?

Like what? I don't go off roading or take it to the track all the time so I don't know what an unusual condition would be? I dont get oil analysis done but I think I will start
