coolant smell

I'm a new member and I have a completely stock 07 Titian Se, CC, 4WD with 2000 odd miles on it. Every now and then I get a coolant smell that I pick up as soon as I open my door. All gauges are all within normal limits (including temps). When the smell occurs the coolant is circulating throught the over-flow tank. I can see it running down the side and it actually has the tank stained green. I have owned a few vehicles in my time and traded an 02 Frontier w/80,000 mi, which I bought new, and have never really seen the coolant circulate like that (maybe I never had the need to look). I took it to my dealer who told me that it is normal. They told me they pressure tested it and found no leaks or problems. I find it hard to believe that Nissan would manufacture a vehicle that would give off a smell of coolant. I did have a few problems with that particular dealer in the past with my Frontier because my service manager had a Frontier and would always say, "well mine does that too". I just don't think this is normal and wanted some thoughts. Thanks.

Re: coolant smell

If it isn't puking or overheating, it's probably okay.

Re: coolant smell

There have been issues with the radiator caps not venting properly. It is the one on the radiator itself, not the one on the overflow tank. There is a TSB on it.

Re: coolant smell

just go and get it pressure tested at the dealer theyll have to change out the cap on the radiator if not holding pressure properly. had mine replaced about a two months ago but never had the smell like the one youre describing.

Re: coolant smell

Yeah that is not normal no leak should even be visible anywhere. There is also a recall about the cooling fan on the 07 Titan ask your dealer and see if your truck is included. Goodluck.

Re: coolant smell

Look on the overflow tube at the radiator neck. I have a tiny leak there. Not enough to drop the level but the tiny seepage is enough to give off the smell of coolant and leave green scale on it. Two and a half years and 47,000 miles and never had to add coolant although it's time to flush and change it now.

Mine has done that since day one and has been pressure tested a few times and found to be fine. I did have the radiator cap replaced once but I still get a whiff every now and then...especially after towing. I never lose any coolant either. I'd have it checked at the dealer but I think they'll find it ok and a little coolant smell is normal for this truck.

Re: coolant smell

My 04 has always had this. Certain weather conditions seem to make it more noticeable (winter).

The dealer has tested several times and replaced radiator cap but never found anything; never lost any coolant.

Smell is near overflow bottle. My relatives F-150 and Expedition do the same.

Re: coolant smell

I took mine into the dealer today because I saw some dried up coolant around the water pump and some other areas, dealer said it was a tiny leak coming from the Thermostat housing, they said its fine to drive until the part gets in and they can replace it. Any else ever hear of that one?

I agree.

I get the smell sometimes also after towing or hauling butt. The Titans cooling system is unique. It doesn't have a pressure relief cap. The overlow tank is part of the system.
