I use simple green. After the motor is dry, spray STP Son of a Gun protectant on all hoses and black surfaces. Your engine will look new and it makes easier to clean next time.

Yup. Simple green on a cold engine. Let it soak and rinse with the hose. Works like a charm.
I agree!
You don't want to use any hi-pressure spray on late model vehs, water can get forced into connectors that normally can keep water out.
I would stay away from steam also. There will be guys who claim they do it (hi-pressure/steam) all the time and no problems, but I work on a fleet of the same vehs and can tell you if you hi-pressure enough vehs, there will be issues...

yeah but... i thought the VK56 is a distributor-less design, so no having to deal with distributor caps and such.
Yes, yes. But that is just 1 item. Still lots of "such" to deal with, really! It's the connectors that can be a real problem months/years later .
And yes, the starter failed by the mud that got washed in to it. Water on a starter or alternator, will usually just drain off without any problem. The starter on our Titans is well hidden, many would never have expected it to be where it is. I was surprised!
I do use Engine Brite and hose my engines off at home (twice a year) and at work on a regular basis. I would not use steam for reasons already given. I do use water with caution. And yes, I messed up on that a few times too! I buy at least a couple cases of Engine Brite every month at work, we have a small fleet of hydrualic powered trucks. Lots of cleaning to do.
Just be careful.

I used this [Gunk Engine Brite] for years, but it leaves a nasty smell when you drive for about a week, so no more Gunk for me!!!
Once, I used the heavy-duty engine brite (didn't read the "HD" part) and it smelled for 2 weeks! The regular stuff was ok and had only a mild orange scent for a couple of days. I think I'm going to try the Simple Green next.
