,... my vote is for detroit diesels man those sthings are still out and running on barges pumpin out crude oil to the refineries (ima welder i repair barges)...
As far as detroit goes, those are some wicked engines. I actually witnessed one of these things run backwards. Awesome, scary, hilarious, all happening at once! My grandpa actually had enough wits to slap a board over the muffler to shut that smokin sona***** down. I will never forget that day.

Detroit(as far as I know) is the only one that will do this. The engine bogs down to failure and upon relief of the load applied, fires in reverse function--it's a freak thing that I had never even heard of til after this event--the engine (spinning reverse of its design) sucks oil as blow by, ignites it in reverse compression and continues reverse operation. It is detrimental. Turning the key off and shutting fuel down does not stop it because of the oil it is now sucking up from the crankcase for fuel. It's one of those engineering marvels. The only way to keep it from completely self-destructing is to kill what is now the intake=the muffler. Believe me, it is not a "fun" event and probably one I will never witness again. Smoke POURS from the intake(because it is now the exhaust) and it's a heck of a racket.

TitanEngineer, it's always good to have your input on the this issue.
Last I heard, International is the largest supplier of diesels in the US. Ford is the only company that is having trouble with their platform that I know of.
A V6 TD would be right up my ally. As long is it had roughly the same torque as the current 5.6, that would be fine. More would be better and I don't really care about HP since the torque does the work. I want the mileage and the longevity. I have friends with older 3/4 diesels getting over 20 mpg. It seems all that HP in the new ones is costing some mileage.
The big 3 have a longer front end (in my estimation) that is more conducive to and inline 6. I am not sure if that would fit in a Titan or Tundra. I see it as better engineering to have a bigger cab.
I REALLY love my truck and hope that Nissan stays in the hunt and markets a half ton diesel.

Mercedes did actually buy Detroit and they are a subsidiary of Daimler AG. Detroit still makes its engines, but it also makes ones for Mercedes which are basically Detroit's with nice shiny looking silver paint jobs. If you check out Detroit's website and look up the MBE 4000 and 900 those are the ones I'm talkin about.

Interesting to know. It is always good to get on this site and find guys in the know, not just on Titans.

This is what I heard from ppl at nissan - There is a 4 banger going in a 3/4 and 1ton with 400hp and 780fptq this motor is being used in backhoes overseas, they are getting 4 times the work done on the same amount of fuel - Then there's the 6 banger that's powerstroke is making that is to go in the titan we are driving the 1/2 ton not sure on power - If this is true then Titan will be a force to be reckon with.

If that is the same engine that they were researching back in late 04 early 05, that one is down(the 4 banger). Researchers reported back that no problems mechanically, but unknown nameplates in the North American marketplace sent skepticism and sales(dropping) scares. It was actually a slightly modified 4cyl Isuzu as used in the Hitachi 160's and 200's. They wouldn't/couldn't brand it Isuzu and that sent them searching for branding which brought up the skepticism. Kick AZZ engine though, and we would've been fortunate to get it. Your numbers were a little high though as I recall and AGAIN, that is if we are talking about the same engine. I'm not sure if many of you know(if it is in fact true), I heard that our tranny is a modified tranny that's been in service overseas behind a 490ftlbs torque diesel that's been used in service/box trucks for the last 7.5yrs.

I might have been a bit conservative, I didn't want to sound unrealistic! It is a shame, in today's world, that a simple thing such as name recogniztion would prohibit the powers that be from initiating a proven performer in the NAMS(north american market survey). The Hitachi's that I work with every day are AWESOME-in the true since of the word. For those of you that don't know: Hitachi and Isuzu and Nissan ARE leading technology engineers WORLDWIDE. I will not go into it much, unless by PM, but the best known names in American construction equipment have Japanese backgrounds and technologies under American nameplates. However, I've heard of people trading in their Duramax's when they found out they were Isuzu based engines??!!??!! Go figure.
BTW; the I-6 that Navastar/International was providing for testing made 364hp and 629 torque. It was not tier 3 though, it was gearing for tier three but final numbers didn't jive.

I hate to fuel the fire here but I will tell you what my dealer told me last week... let me preface this comment by saying I know very little about engines and even less about diesel engines... but I bought an 06 titan last summer and I love it but I bought a fifth wheel trailer this summer and I have been pulling it with my titan fine... two weeks ago I decided to go look at diesels to make it a little easier to tow my fifth wheel up the steep canyons here in utah... I shopped around and really didnt like any of the trucks as much as my titan, so I went to the local dealer and asked if the rumors about titan getting a diesel were true...
the dealer told me that titan would have a diesel in the 2009 model or 2010 at the latest... he went on to explain that it would be an inline 6, CAT 335 engine and that it would be on a 3/4 ton frame....he said that nissan already had it worked out but they were having to modify the engine to reduce emissions for one reason or another...
reading the other posts in the thread I am not sure that makes any sense but he seemed to know what he was talking about ... interestingly enough he also said that there was a 2008 and 1/2 model informally coming out with some changes but I dont remember what they were...
It would shock not only me if Nissan had ANYTHING to do with CAT. #1-They are competing karitzu's(spelling?); companies joined together with the purpose of market domination/success. CAT is tied to Mitsubishi! Misubishi has been sh!tt!ng on CAT since the union. Their union is set for another 3yrs or so. Even after that, #2-Nissan's close ties with Hitachi(the founders were brothers-that's why Hitachi never made cars!) and Hitachi's close ties with Isuzu(that brother married into the family), would lead me to the logical placement of an Isuzu(or one of it's close ties) in our truck's platform. Whether it be Heavy Duty or otherwise. The only thing holding them back is North American history and North American's obsession with status, name recognition, and the more power MTV style culture and blah blah blah and so on.... Here's a little insight on this statement: When tested side by side, the four cylinder excavator with the same capacities of the six cylinder excavator; the four cyl smoked the six, and saved about 23% fuel. The four bangers were shot down due to STATUS. Meaning the North American market was not ready to step down from the status of having the six under the cover and being able to say "mines' bigger". Kinda crazy, but absolute truth! They won't nameplate an isuzu in ours because of name recognition "scares". They are still exploring possibilities, which most of the R & D is done on, they just want to cover all their bases first. They are leaning to a more "recognizable" nameplate for the North American market.
Most of the salespeople are not true "carguys" and know actually very little. He may have simply been repeating a rumor he heard from a potential customer or something, but he's WAY off base with Cat. If I have to eat crow on this, I will, but I'm not that worried.

Yeah its a shame about the size thing, I've seen some diesel four bangers that could put some power down. Here is a good example of a Cummins 4BT(basically a 5.9 with two cylinders chopped off) goin up against a Powerstroke. Granted that motor is in a Hummer and not really hard for that thing to keep traction vs the Ford, but you can see what they are capable of. Plus I've heard of people gettin over 400 hp and 600 ft/lbs, and thats pretty damn good for a 3.9L motor.
Yep, its all in the turbo and fuel. The only thing about turboing the crap out of one is longevity. But power has never been an issue, just a trade off with durability. When Navistar was playin with Cummins on puttin out over 300horses(mid to late 90's), an engineer at Cummins said "let Power Stroke play the power game all they want; I've got a street legal(which would not be today unfortunately) 5.9L back here putting out 714 HP and 1160 TQ, Dodge just can't back it up with a truck!"

Is anyone familiar with the older 8.1 or 16L Cummins?? Those things were/are absolute beasts. The 8.1L can/does make numbers around 900HP when tuned and that 16L in semi's is pretty much king of the road.
