HID Lighting?

Been looking for real HID lighting all over TT. Anyone know where to order a complete good kit for lights and fogs? Had a kit but my mechanic said was not a real HID kit... POS..

not to hijack... but what is HID? it sounds good and i see it used a lot (LOL) but have no idea what it is.

if you want real HID lighting then you need to do a HID retrofit using projectors dedicated to displaying an HID bulb. Every other kit you buy, no matter how expensive or cheap uses rebased bulbs that will fit in our halogen projectors.

Putting HID bulbs in a halogen projector is crap because the reflector bowl was not meant to spread the light properly causing glare and possibly blinding oncoming drivers. There is also a better chance that a cop will give you a ticket since it is illegal to put HID bulbs in a halogen headlamp.

I suggest you check out HID Planet . com. There is someone there who did complete retrofit with Porsche bixenon projectors.

Also, do not buy bulbs much higher than 4300K. Most people think the higher the K the greater the light, but this is not true. A higher K means a bluer light which means less light output and more chance of getting pulled over. 4300K is what OEM manufacturers use and it gives the whitest light and best output.

I have HID Low and Fog's. Honestly IMO the low beams don't scatter that bad if much at all (which decreases light output farther from the vehicle and can blind oncoming traffic). The HID and 9006 halogen bulb shape is pretty similar which helps quite a bit. Also there are quite a few cars out there that utilize reflector style housings for HIDs, stock...02-03 maxima's for one.

The fogs are bright. If anything they are the culprits of blinding on coming traffic and look very bright from the front due to their housing style (it is designed to scatter light for short distance illumination).

I have my fogs aimed a little lower and have never had anyone flash me or cops stop me (I've had the low beams for over a year and the fogs for about 8 months). I think the light the fogs put out was a bigger gain/differrence than the low beams.

I got my HID fog kit from local member that sold his truck and I beleive it is a 880 HID retro-fit kit (the conectors have a slightly different style and you have to cut out a little tab to fit it into the titan fog connector). I believe he got the kit from Ebay. I got my low beam kit form amazon a long time ago, but it is also a china kit. I haven't had one issue with them so far and the light output is awsome compaired to stock. It seems now-a-days you can get HID kits on Ebay for ~$100...so for $200-$250 you can get low/fog HID kits.

HID systems use a bulb with no filiment, just 2 tiny electrodes close togather, again with a gas. This time the voltage is pumped up to say 25,000 volts, enough to cause the electricity to jump the distance between the electrodes creating a arc, causing the light.

There is a Ignitor to pump up the voltage, and of course the bulb is special. This type of lighting puts out more light for less power, BUT....can be very expensive.
Those lights you see all over a racing buggy or Trophy Truck cost about $500-$600 for just one light...

Hey Jessefrank,

I installed my HID fogs last night and am doing my headlights now. I noticed the fogs were bright as well. Which way do you turn to adjust hem down more???

I got my kits from ebay. Around $160 for both fogs and lows. I have had them for about 4 months and they are awesome. When I drive my fiances pathfinder with stock bulbs can;t stand it. She doesn't want hid's in her car though.

blah, blah, blah... i've got HIDs and they've been FANTASTIC for the last 2 years! all you need to do is adjust the light down a bit since the lumen output is almost quadruple that of piece of sh!t halogen bulbs. if you get HIDs for the foglight housings be aware that the light output will literally illuminate houses on both sides of the street. they are very bright! HIDs consume half the amount of power a halogen bulb does yet the lumen output is superior in every sense! got my HIDs from some dude on eBay from china... ordered them and got them from some place in china in 2 whole days via UPS. bought my HIDs for 158 bucks and that included shipping, now he sells the same HID set for 90 bucks, but that doesn't include shipping.

This is true, but those housings were designed for an HID bulb. There are 2 types of bulbs D2S and D2R. The HID's that still use a reflector use D2R bulbs which have part of the bulb painted over to prevent excess light from escaping the housing and blinding oncoming traffic. The plug and play retrofit kits may work well for some, but they are not going on my truck (again, this is personal preference, not meant to be insulting)

Your mechanic said the kit you bought was crap because it was plug and play. All plug and plays will be crap in his eyes and the only true HID is a full retrofit as stated before.

Installed both fogs and low beams. Drove it tonight and had somone immediately flash me. I think it's the fog lamp HID that is aimed too high. My low beams seem a bit too low actually now. Maybe it's just the 10K beam. I need to adjust my fogs for sure as they will be an integral part in my view if i cant get more from my low beams.

10k? geez...how can you see where you're going?! That's almost purple....too dark. 6k is much more illuminating and less likely to get you stopped. I don't have the fogs done but I do get flashed every so often for the low beam HIDs.

exactly! the higher the temperature scale the less lumen output. factory-equipped HIDs generally run in the 4300-4500k range. i personally went with the 6k just cause i like the pure white color of mine.

as far as adjusting the fogs there's 2 screws in the back i think. just adjust those till the beam moves up or down. up against a wall or a garage of course.

Got mine off of eBay! $330.00 shipped for a pair of rebased, so they fit in a 9006 socket, DS2 bulb and Osram ballasts. The entire kit was plug and play.

They are plenty bright for me, however my fogs need to aimed down a bit. I also bought a pair of the same manufacturer some 6K bulbs for and when these might blow. That was my biggest fear was the connections not mathing up on different brands. I just think the 10K's a re bit too different for the old codgers to get used to. I can hear them cussing me out going down the road. LMAO Guess i just need to turn the screw and see which way does what................*sighs*
