Fuel Light

I just bought an 06 Titan Se. When the fuel lite came on i went for a fill up, but it only took 23 gallons. Does that mean the fuel light comes on when I have 5 gallons left. fueleconomy.gov says it has a 28 gallon tank and get 353 miles to tank on average. I am at mile 283 now. Is this accurate. I never like to pay too much attention to the fuel light. I'd rather go on mileage.
Thanks

Re: Fuel Light

Yea its about right.. I get roughly 400 miles on a tank in the city, give or take few, before my light comes on.. And if i fill up soon after the light blings, i usually put in about 24 gallons....

Re: Fuel Light

Hmm. Yea i usually get around that. Its been as low as 300 before and as high as 450.. I guess it just has to do with how heavy your foot is, what the weather is like, and a few other variables.. Ive read alot of different posts about a very wide range of gas mileages..

Re: Fuel Light

i always fill up at around 1/4 tank and it takes between 17-20 gallons. If I wait for the fuel light it takes about 22 gallons. I don't like pushing it that far.

I get around 260-280 miles or so from my normal fillups

Re: Fuel Light

Well, 4x4 vs. 4x2 makes a difference as well as BT & OR packages. 4x2 trucks will get better mileage. It's just physics......

Re: Fuel Light

The mileage does vary, even between trucks with the same options (i.e. 4x4, off-road, big tow, and so on). As far as the light, it goes on anywhere from 5-7 gallons remaining in the tank.

Re: Fuel Light

The light comes on too early for my preference. I figure the light should be an “Oh $hit” light telling me I’d better start looking for gas right now. There are times I my light comes on when I’m headed to work. I drive the rest of the way to work, back home, to work again, and I fill up until the next afternoon on the way home.

Re: Fuel Light

Yup, I hate this characteristic of my Titan. Although I typically fill up at 300 to 350 miles with 24ish gallons, when I see that light come on I get worried, when in reality I still have 4ish gallons left and maybe 3 usable or 50 some more miles.

Your reserve eats up a few of those gallons. It's been discussed here several times just how much "reserve" we actually have.

Re: Fuel Light

I personally prefer the light to come on a little earlier as this does. It is not a good idea to run your gas down and increase your odds of fouling up a fuel filter or fuel injectors.

Also, a five gallon reserve when towing is only about 40-60 miles because of the lower gas mileage. This might be one reason why the light seems premature when not towing.

Very good point about the towing milage. I would also like to add that other vehicles' pumps are set up about the same as ours and I've heard that the more gas in the tank around it helps cool the pump and prevent premature failures from overheating. May be another thing to consider; the more air in the tank, the more sloshing and vapors=the less gas you'll actually get to use.

Maybe you want it like my Clark forklift at work. The low fuel light comes on and runs out of gas 5 seconds later. I have been caught on the other side of our site many times when this happened. Then I have to radio for a new tank or walk
