It's crazy how they do these things now. They could just pickup a random car, (steal it) and drive off like they repossesed it and cops and witnesses none the wiser until it's reported stolen.
!st vehical, ford ranger, locked my self out the truck at the motocross track, luckly I had a friend there that was small enough to fit thru the back window, We borrowed a flathead ,opened it and he climbed thru the window, pays off to be short somtimes lol
So I ended up locking my keys inside my running truck last night. I have a aftermarket remote start for my Titan and when the brake pedal is pushed the doors lock. I jumped into the truck, pressed the brake and jumped back out for something and shut the door not thinking about all 4 doors being locked. so there I was looking from the outside in at my keys in the ignition....
SO anyway, once the 'breaking' guy showed up it took him about 30 min to get in...the whole time complaining how imports are so hard to do. I asked him why anyone would want a vehicle that was easy to break in to...he said so his job was easier. He barely got into my truck...had to go under the window and back into interior with a wire to press a window button down so I could get in again.
Lesson learned: 1) Hide a spare key somewhere so when my brain shuts of I can get back into my truck
2) No one is going to just walk up and quickly steal a titan...unless the have pateince and about 30 min
Thats a REALLY long time to get into the truck. It should only take about a minute for an experienced person to get into any vehicle. As long as they have the right tools. And anyone that is paid to unlock doors should have the right tools or it is very likely they could cause a lot of damage.
heck sometimes they have the keys from the dealer if its repod
They dont have the keys to make the truck run though. You have to hook the truck up to a computer to program it.
Any keycodes are very easily acquired for repo companies. If you buy the truck brand new and its financed, the finance company usually has the key code and they provide it directly to the repo company.
People could theoretically get your specific key code but they have to know your VIN. And they would have to go through someone with an account at a company that distributes key codes.
A lot of thefts on higher end vehicles are happening with tow trucks. They dont really use flatbeds as they take too long. Most either use regular wheel lifts or Illusions.
And just as a tip.... When you park overnight, turn your wheels. It makes it a lot more difficult to get the truck out if they are towing it. (unless they have the key code of course). If it has the wheels turned and its in between 2 objects, the only way to tow it out w/o creating major damage would be to have someone break in. jump inside, hold the brake down while someone else drags the truck out and then release the brake.
But also realize that once they get it out, its gone. They could also just as easily drag it out, flip around and pick it up from the front, get underneath and pop the linkage into neutral and then tow it straight out.

And I forgot...They dont have to get it through a dealer. Most dealers wont even get involved. But they do have numerous private companies out there that provide the key codes to people that are "authorized" to get them.
The single Amazon review is poor but I like mine. I would say go to hitchsafe.com but it tried to put a virus on my PC when I went there. Thank goodness for Norton.

Haha. Not anymore. Work for a an auto finance company now. I use to do it for 3 years here in AZ though. Too many long hours. My "banker's" hours are a lot nicer.
Well, it was my turn. I got out of the running truck (2004) to push some snow off the hood and somehow the doors locked.
I was in within 2 minutes. I have the back slider window so I just put my 2 palms flat on slider glass and started to move the window left/right until I got some play and then POP! the little clip that holds it shut just popped right off.
Once I was in, the clip snapped back together and it's all back to normal again.
This worries me how easy it was. I plan on talking to the Dealer about it on my next service to see what they say about it.
