Angry Is This common with Nissan Dealers

I took my 08 Titan to get the Fog lamp kit installed, and they charged me 5% of the total cost as shop supplies. I've owned Fords, Chryslers, isuzu, and Mercedes and never seen such a charge. Is this common at the Nissan dealerships??

I know what you're thinking--- why I didn't install it myself, well because truck only had 140 miles on it and didn't want to break anything accidently so i let the professionals handle it.

How much was the 5%?

If you want to make a big deal about it, ask the service tech for a list of supplies used, otherwise, didn't they give you an estimate before work was done and you agreed to it?

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

They want to make sure they don't lose any money on the deal. A couple of zip ties can get PRETTY PRICEY!!!! After all they only made a few thousand on the truck you just bought from them.

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

The Kit including the switch was $199.99 plus tax and $ 140.00 plus tax. Then they charged me like $20.00 for supplies and charged tax on the total.

They did give me what i wanted for my trade, $9500.00 of the truck. Then they threw in Pin striping, tow package, full length Nissan running boards, the interrior stain proofing, also where they will completely detail the car ever 6 months for 3 yrs for $500. I think that was a excellent deal.

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

why didn't you just do it yourself - it is a pretty simple install and if I can do it, being as technically challenged as I am, I would think anyone can do it....I'd never have a dealer install stuff like that for me....with the exception of the stuff they have to do that i obviously can't, any accessory I will install....

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

I fix plenty of cars at my house.
I charge a flat 20 dollars to get off my butt, open the garage door, and move cars around so I can get one inside. People gladly pay it. It covers my costs for grease, carb cleaner, doing a load of laundry to clean the rags I used on their project, connectors, recyclying the old fluids, beer, etc. I make everybody pay it because I got tired of being taken advantage of.
Moral of the story?
Lots of people charge for stuff like that.

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

Shop Fees are common as dirt, nothing to worry about. And no, they dont post it in big letters, it just appears on the bill. Easy profit center for them.

Try a site sponsor to buy that light kit for about 160 instead of 200. Just for future referance.

What you are doing is different, it's flat honest. You don't tell people twenty bucks and then after the job is done point to a little sign on a back wall that says they owe you an extra ten. Most garages charge 50 or much more per hour of labor. They aren't paying their help that much. The extra is to cover the overhead and profit. They just don't want to post a higher per hour rate, they would need a couple ambulances on standby.

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

i would say NO not all, but i can relate. i've had to have the dealer bail me out before because i was young and didn't know where to find the $0.10 blown fuse which ended up being $30 in the end and not even 5 minutes to fix. but you had to pay $200+tax for the foglight, another $140+tax for labor and then $20 (tax too?) miscellaneous? tax can only be applied to the product and the misc charge is bogus. the kit is complete. use of tools and electricity should be covered under labor. now this is nickels and dimes!!! maybe try another place in the future.

I'll try a new dealer but he is only 1.5 miles from my work. But I'll be going to a different dealer on Saturday.

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

I don't want to lawyer this thread up, but I would guess that on most sheets that people sign prior to letting the dealer hack at their car, it states somewhere that the estimate excludes shop fees, hazardous waste fees and the like.

I am not saying you should read all this stuff as the dealer probably won't let you remove the terms anyway (someone should try it by striking all these terms out - the service reps probably won't know what to do), but I do think it is pretty common at most dealers and mechanics.

Re: Is This common with Nissan Dealers

Others here seemed to have heard of SHOP FEES. My dealers ship, or any dealership I've ever used had no such fees. I think that's just BS personally. If they make ends meet with the ridiculous per hour fees they charge, tough.
