Actually the larger the tank, the heavier the truck will be when full so the extra weight will reduce the gas mileage overall.

You have two choices in life:
You can stay single and be miserable,
or get married and wish you were dead.
You like to type a lot don't you? At the same time what you are saying is irrelevant. Wages have gone down, people have lost their job and gas prices are going up which will drive everything up in turn.
Who are you kidding? Oh never mind.... we are comparing normal daily life with a crisis 20 years ago that lasted a year. I guess that's how far we've made it, where every day is now a record breaking recession!
I don't deny that prices are going up currently. That much is obvious. But my point is that its not quite the crisis that the media is making it out to be. When you adjust for inflation, prices are really not that much higher than they have been in the past in proportion to wages. And right now, we should consider ourselves lucky that we don't suffer the same prices that Europeans do. At the same time, I'm certainly not advocating that we do nothing to decrease the hit that gas takes on our wallets.
And I don't see that there's a 'recession' every day or even that there is a general recession. A lot of it is media sensationalism much like global warming. Our economy is still strong by any standard. Sure, some markets may have slowed down, but that's a fairly regular occurrence to see downturns and upturns in those same markets. Point is, there's no reason to be pessimistic about our economy as it is. Here's an example. You say that people are losing jobs; a recent report says the exact opposite. http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/03/news...ober/index.htm (also if you read further in the article, average wages are going up).
According to what I'm learning in economics, 4.4% is a d*mn good rate!
Gas is ridiculous, sure, but what are we going to do? Not drive? The middle east has us by the balls and they know it.
yes there will always be someone coming into a thread telling us how good we have it compared to other countries at 7+ bucks a gallon, but that's like comparing apples to oranges.
It sucks right now, i hope the ship gets righted. I can afford 3 dollar gas, barely, if 4 dollar plus gas becomes the norm, i dont know what we'll do. (my fam)
A big part of the problem is that the news continues to over dramatize the situation causing pessimism. The supply of oil isn't much differant then it was a year ago, and yet the price of a barrel of oil is up 35 dollars over last year.

That is really the core of the problem - our demand for gas is relatively inelastic (it changes very slowly at a macro level). The core consumption is spent on the mundane tasks - i.e. driving to work, transporting goods, etc. It will be very slow to have people move back closer to where they work and/or back into the cities. It will happen, though it may take several decades.
On the other note, I really didn't mean to start a debate on inflation or politics or anything that controversial when I started this thread. I was just surprised to see that a Titan had a 37 gallon tank!
I could care about the size or the cost per fillup of gas. I just care about how long I can make it last. That's why we take some leaps and bounds to make our trucks engine and trans more efficient to hekp offset the cost of oil. There are two residuals we get...more power, and a happy foot. Usually, the result is poorer gas mileage . So in turn...I bought me a motorcycle
It really makes me laugh when people freak out about the size of a tank in a vehicle. It really is irrelevant, you will still spend the same amount of money to go the same distance. You will just have to make less stops. I wish I had a 50 gallon tank, if people are so worried about how much gas it will take per fill up, then fill up more often. Also when people like my brother that freak out when he is below half a tank, he still has over 10 gallons of gas, but he will not go below half a tank. Just another 2 cents.

So true - the only problem I have with a larger tank is that I would have to run my credit card twice!
Some stations around me had the "limit" still set at $50 back when gas prices jumped a few years ago. They have since pumped it up to $75 but I suspect that will need to be bumped again soon than later....
Back when I was travelling 170 miles/day, 5 days a week, I was looking at cars with the max range - more so than max mpg - as I was getting tired of filling up other day. It had gotten to know the gas station attendant so well, he actually started to clean my windshield everytime I filled up (I was filling up in NJ)!
I picked the Hybrid Civic not jsut because of mileage, but because I could go 3-4 days between fill ups, depending on how much I topped off the tank (you can squeeze more than 1 gallon over the tank capacity - so I could get an extra 50+ miles - I was averaging close to 54 mpg).
I almost went with a Nissan Altima, as it had a 20 gallon tank so its range would be about 600 miles as well, but the Nissan dealer offered me about $2.5K less for my 05 Titan KC than the Honda dealer. So the net of the deal (what I would have paid out of pocket) was the same - with the tax credit for the Honda, the Honda was cheaper.
The real kicker was that about 4 months later I traded in the Honda Civic Hybrid, with almost 14K miles and minor front spoiler damage (about $600) for about two hundred less than I paid for it to get a Titan Crew Cab that I got about $7K below MSRP.
I think I possibly save money with a larger tank. If I buy gas at $3.50/gal and during the time I drive gas goes up but then comes back down to $3.50/gal I would save by not having to purchase gas during the higher prices.
Several times on my Honda Pilot I got caught this way. I had to get gas just before gas went back down a few cents.

I was in Maui in 2001,gas was $3.25 we almost $hit, went back in 2003 spent $3.25 but were more used to spending this.Went back 2 weeks ago to Kauai their gas was $3.35 and I almost $hit all over again!
Now we pay more than they do?WTF? Theirs used to be higher, stayed the same though and now we pay more? Don't we send "our" gas over there?
Where is the logic in this?

You pay more than 3.35 a gallon? We pay around 2.85 a gallon.
despite how much gas costs, I've always wondered if a large blast to the middle east would create beautiful pieces of glass...
as far as gas and the pricing, "they" have you by the balls. it doesn't matter how many barrels are already here, if the price goes up, psychologically they increas gas prices. we all follow suit because what choice do we really have? naturally there is spill over to other industries that rely on petrollium based products as well.
another fun fact is to tell you that the stations where gas is dispensed only make about 5 cents per gallon profit, which is why most gas stations have service bays or stores, more income generated, the gas alone does not make them successful. in addition you lease the station from the gas company and pay them a mortgage or rental. i suppose this works well if you don't have to pay taxes for a while.
as a country, a people, a society, we should take it upon ourselves to develope alternate means of combustion/fuel. fuel cell vehicles aren't all they are cracked up to be because of the pollution required to make said fuel cells. there is a solution but it can not exist because of greed, and that is a whole different issue. i guess you shouldn't care about helping the world whilst you count your millions, "they" don't give a **** because "they" can afford not too.
i would love to see a change in my life time, will i? meh...
