Good rumour I saw from somebody who makes the parts. The fill tube for the tranny is going away sometime soon. This post is first I've read of a 2008.5.

Re: Titan 2008.5 - Whats different from 2008?

It's true. Nissan has historically done these half-year or '.5' models for a while. They come out with a new or updated model early, hence the nomenclature. And we thought the '07s were a short production run. The '08s are gonna be shorter.
One good point I've seen: '08.5 XEs will return with body color front ends! Sorry '08 owners...I can't stand the smoke gray from ends. Any one else with some new points?

If they take it away and the trans becomes non user serviceable how do we check the level. If we fry a trans then Nissan should eat it. Say you have a small leak you won't be able to top off the fluid anymore.

I would hope access is still there, just not through an extended tube. May have to get on the ground.

I read of the change in a post on this site, just today. The fellow said they are making a bracket to hold the wire harness that is presently held by the tranny tube.

I had a Lincoln LS with no trans dipstick. When I read how much
trouble it was to check the trans fluid level, I couldn't
believe it...........something like this: there was a standpipe in
the bottom of the trans......you remove the standpipe plug &
if some fluid comes out you assume the trans is full.....if no fluid
came out you added some until it overflowed out the standpipe
drain.......MUCH easier than a dipstick.
I also underlined in the owner's manual where it stated:
The trans does not consume fluid, unless there is a leak it
does not need to be checked.

-
oh........& I can't remember how fluid was added.

The tranny tube; sounds like the company was looking for something to cut costs on for the last half of the build run...

Re: Titan 2008.5 - Whats different from 2008?

the dipstick will be a thing of the past....
found this propoganda from Ford. Ford calls it a "sealed tranmission"
-
Another major change is in what cannot be found under the hood - a dipstick. The new transmission is sealed at the factory with 11 quarts of a semi-synthetic blend of specially formulated fluid that should not require service for 150,000 miles. This is a benefit to owner convenience and the environment.

Because Explorer is the first Ford SUV with a sealed transmission, it was subjected to a series of brutal lab and real-world tests. Some tests were conducted in Ford's Research and Engineering Center in Dearborn, Mich., where the transmission was run for 50,000 miles at speeds of 115-120 mph on a dynamometer.

I hope the Nissan dosen't do this, but at least our trannies are better than Ford's.

My experience with the ford "sealed transmission" is pretty bad. We have 03-07 ford exploders at work (military) and all I can say is that their tranmissions are garbage. WIth just daily use, we've replaced 2 transmissions of 3 explorers in less then 40k. When I was deployed to Qatar, in six months we went through 4 transmissions in 3 explorers. For some reason the transmission fluid evaporates or something which leads to poor shifting...losing gears..... and eventually failing.

My friends new 07 Toyota 4runner V8 has the "no dip stick" Auto tranny.

Just doesn't seem right. Guess it forces you to take it to Toyota, or your dealer for service at certain intervals.

Now if your Tranny runs low, and theirs mechanical damage, and you didn't get your tranny serviced at Toyota on schedule, the manufacturer has another legal, "out" to deny warranty paid service.

Seems like a "win win" situation for the vehicle manufacturer to gain some extra $$ in servicing, that us owners could have saved by adding our own Tranny fluid when needed with having a tranny dip stick.

The way I see it is if they FORCE you to have them service it then the Magnusson Moss act show play a role in it. If they mandate that you use their parts or else then they must by law give you the part free. If no one else can service the trans then they have you hostage on the cost. Let a lawyer hear of this and we'll see it on the six o' clock news.

So is that all? The dipstick and the front of the XEs? I find it hard to believe that they'd do a .5 just for that...
