Out of curiosity ONLY (not an attempt to be sarcastic), why would an inaccurate thermometer be of any concern?
From your sig I see you're on the south left coast, so I can understand why it's not a concern for you, however in Kentucky this time a year it's very important to know if it's 36, or 28 so you can be forewarned of changing temps that might cause black ice.

Just how does he know as well as how dow we ALL know that our temp gages are right on the money or really off? The meeting of the minds may only know this answer.
Well I have thermometers at the house. They broadcast the temp on the radio and we have the bank sign. When all those are within 2* and I'm consistantly 5-8* colder than that... You don't need advanced math skills or equipment to logically conclude that the one in the truck is off! I have had engine heat affect them before, but never had one cooler than the actual temp. Thanks for sticking up for me there Roy, lol. And to everybody else that took time to let me know that your's are more accurate than mine. Think I'll be having the dealer order me up one that is right. Just hope they don't have to tear apart the interior to do it.

yes and no. the temperature at the bank may indeed be 5º warmer or cooler at that exact spot then what it is at the truck. so inless you plan on driving your truck up the bank sign or into you yard and putting your thermometer gage right next to it then its not necessarly going to read the same.
Cneary that sounds like the kinda crap a service writer would come up with to avoid a warranty claim. You're not a service writer are you?

Anyone know where the actual sensor is located? I could never figure out in my small brain how a sensor put anywhere on a vehicle that moves, besides in the cabin, could be accurate. Almost any place seems like you would have effects from wind or vehicle temps.

Wind chill is not measured by inanimate objects....like thermometers, cars etc. It's a calculation of temperature and wind speed. My thermometer is always very very close to radio station temps...which can vary unless you're parked at that radio station.

I 'm a Geologist and I frequently take a couple of expensive lab grade thermometers with me into the field. Our protocol requires that these thermometers be calibrated by the manufacturer semi annually. I’ve checked my Titan’s thermometer against them a number of times just out of curiosity. I'm amazed how accurate my Titan's thermometer is. It is never off more than a degree or two.
One thing to remember though is that once you stop, the Titan thermometer will not change until you start moving again and your speed exceeds 13 mph.

okay - that doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, if you put a block in a freezer and measure the temp of that block it's X degrees cold. And then if you take a fan in the same situation and blow the cold air on the block that air is going to actively cool the block even further and the block will now measure a lower temp. Am I missing something here?

Really? Thats odd. Why wouldnt it read sitting still?
Because it is behind the front bumper and it could pick up heat from the engine.

I hope I don’t come across as a smart *** know-it-all but here goes. In a nut shell wind chill is calculated assuming that cold air (wind) moving past a person or object will cool it faster than still air. However, even though the air is moving, it will not cool a person or object below the ambient air temperature.
For example if the actual temp is 10 degrees and there is a breeze, the breeze will cool you or an object by transporting heat away much more quickly than still air at 10 degrees. In spite of this the air (breeze) that is moving is at 10 degrees and although it will cool a person or object more quickly, it can not cool it below 10 degrees. When they say that it is 10 degrees outside and the wind chill is -15 degrees, what they really mean is that your exposed skin will loose heat in this 10 degree windy weather at the same rate as it would in -15 degree weather when the air is still.
