Another 4WD question

This weekend I took a trip to Durango,CO, and was towing a trailer. There was plenty of snow, slush, packed snow and ice spots throughout the trip. Especially white out conditions on Wolf Creek Pass. But there were plenty of dry road areas as well. My problem is that 4WD doesn't want to disengage without stopping and going in reverse for a few feet. After getting to dry pavement I would switch back to 2WD and the indicator would not go off for a few miles. So I'd have to stop.

Any ideas? Would this be caused due to the trailer? More strain on transmission and gears in transfer case?

Oh yeah, this truck kicks *** on Wolf Creek Pass with a ton of snow and pulling a trailer!!! 154" base at the ski resort right now.

Our hubs are always locked. Reversing should only be needed on autolocking hubs. Usually, just a few on/off throttle blips while going straight on flat ground will do it. The trailer may be giving a little extra pressure on componants so a little more on and off throttle will do it.

Tried it many times. Still did nothing. I have never had this problem until now. Had always disengaged properly, even with trailer. A couple times I had stopped completely, sat there for a minute, then took off again in 4th gear, and still no. Stopped, did reverse, and almost immediately it disengaged.

Re: Another 4WD question

My '04 started doing the same thing right before the 4WD decided it would not engage at all anymore...getting a new transfer case on Thursday.

Yeah, I'd have it checked by the dealer if that's the case. It shouldn't be THAT hard to get in and out of 4WD.

Re: Another 4WD question

I dont know if its "normal" or not, but my '08 does this exact same thing. Not always, but sometimes it does not immediately come out of 4 High.

My wifes 2006 Nissan XTerra did the same thing too. It was sometimes annoying, but not really a "problem". Least not for me.
