Front Diff axle

I was changing my front diff fluid and I noticed on the left side of the front diff There is a short shaft going into the diff, This short shaft is what connects the axle to the diff. When I move the short shaft up and down left to right it has quite a bit of play in it. Is this normal? There are no fluid leaks. and the fourwheel drive works OK except for a little vibration not bad though.
Is there a way to check this for excessive play. I just want to know before I go to the dealer, Because they will probably say it is fine. Thanks

Re: Front Diff axle

My dealer actually replaced the front diff on my 04 because they claimed that same axle was too loose and was the cause the THUD I was getting going over bumps with the left front wheel.
They changed it, the THUD never went away, and the new diff/axle moved the same exact way so....I believe it's normal..especially if it's not leaking.

Yeh, It's pretty sloppy. I'll have to go to the dealer and crawl under a new one to compare.

Re: Front Diff axle

** Update** They are gonna replace the whole front Diff. under warranty. They said there is too much play in the stub shaft.
