Hey Everyone, i just bought an 05 titan with 43000 miles. the truck is in great shape.
what should i look for maintaince wise, other then the basics. i got the service records and such, and all thr proper fluid changes have been taken care of. Is there any common problems i should look for. I have to pick up the owners manual for the guy i bought it off of, he forgot to give it to me. There is a light on the instrument panel, a red truck with a wrench in it, that flashes when the truck is off. what does it mean.
Also, does this truck have a chipped key if i want to put a starter in it?

Congrats on the new truck. That red blinking light is just telling you the security system is working. Look to see if the brakes were upgraded by Nissan and if the rear end was ever replaced. And yes, there is a chipped key.

You should check to see if its had the brake fix done and if you have the updated rotors. Also check for leakage on the lines underneath the radiator (trans cooler lines).
As long as all the maintinence has been done (tranny flush, rear end oil change) everything should be good to go.
Enjoy your truck! Oh and dont forget to post some pictures!!

Having the updated rotors won't keep you from having future brake problems. The updated "final fix" still doesnt' eliminate the judder. It will come back. As long as you accept the fact that you need to replace both the rotors/pads as a maintenance item, you should be fine. The rotors can be turned if the minimum thickeness hasn't been reached. However, as the rotor gets thinner, the time before the judder comes back becomes shorter. Except for brake problems, my '05 has been flawless. I haven't had the leaking rear axle seals or the leaking tranny lines, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed there. The drivetrain is still silky smooth just like when I bought it new back in '05. However, I don't tow nor do I abuse my truck.
Hopefully, someone here will try to see if the larger factory '08 brakes with bigger rotors and calipers will fit on an '04-'07 Titan and tell us what can be swapped over. If it's just the caliper, rotor and perhaps a slight modification on the spindle, that would be sweet.

thanks for the info, what should i look for in the rear brakes, and what is it that exactly happens. do the rotors warp or something?
as for the starter, the main reason i asked is because there was one installed once. either that or a security system. all the wiring is still in, but the module is gone. so i want to make sure that there isn't the chip key module hidden in there somewhere, cause i only got one key with the truck. i plan on taking it to the dealer for a good run through this week.

The rear brakes are usually fine. They don't warp because most of the stopping force is done by the front brakes where most of weight bias is concentrated on a truck. Nissan probably has the proportioning valve set with too much front bias for liability concerns.
As to what's actually wrong with the front rotors and why they warp so easily, only Nissan and the supplier know the true answer. However, it's probably a bean counter solution at Nissan or perhaps the supplier where the metallurgy is concerned making them prone to warping on a 5Klb truck. If the same rotors were on a 3Klb car, I bet there wouldn't be any problems. The old cast iron rotors were generally more durable than the lighter alloy type rotors of today. Also, the front rotors are probably a tad bit undersized for the Titan as well so they get a double whammy. A cheaper lighter metal alloy combined with thinner and smaller rotor face and you get warping problems.
Do you have the factory immobilizer key alarm? If not, you shouldn't have a chip in the key or the anit theft module in the dash. The non preferred XE's do not, so they don't have a chip in the key.

how will i know if i have the factory immobilizer key alarm? the little red light flashes on the gauge console
With my remote start the factory immobilizer is not removed. They installed a device that turns the immobilizer on and off when the remote start is activated.
I would guess that the stock immobilizer is still functional if the light still lights up.
Taking to the dealer for an inspection is a great idea.

yeah i had to do that when i installed the starter in my wifes jeep. but the module that activate the immobilizer uses one of the keys. You have to sacrifice one of the keys for the starter to work. i looked and didn't see anything except for the old wiring, but who knows. i can just get a spare key cut and see if it starts the truck i guess. if it wount start with a cut key, then things are cool.
