I am going to be building up a tool kit for when I'm stuck out in the middle of the desert broke down or buried in the sand, I'll at least have a chance of getting out of the situation. So throw out some suggestions... what has got you out of a situation?
The cheapest tools you can find, cause your goona lose them anyways.
Here is what I carry in the trucks:
5-6 sets of Vice grips
1qt of oil
Full socket set(deep set if needed also)
Plyers of all sizes
BFH
Tire Plugs
Fire Extinguisher
Epoxy
Duct tape
Electrical tape
Connectors
Mag light
Fuses
Bail wire
Full set of wrench's
Zip ties
Tire Iron
Zip lock bag full of random nuts and bolts
Light weight Craftsman race jack or something similar(NO Hi Lift Jacks)
32oz bottle of water that I keep for the radiator in engine compartment and a 1 gallon jug for me and co-driver in the cab.
*Fully charged cell phone

In addition to AII's post I've always found it nice to have a test light/volt meter. and some extra fuses. it also never hurts to have a few butt connectors. hammer, air tank, or a compressor that works off your truck. also a nice Flashlight. You can use a tow strap to pop a tire back on it's bead with the help of some liquid hand soap. I think it also helps to have a few extra wheel studs/lug nuts.
When I used to go out in the Dunes a lot I pretty much prepared myself to do just about anything. I always had some Stop-leak for the radiator and a can of fix a flat just incase i got sand in the bead and couldn't get a good seal.
But then agian I usually took a rig that my old man and I built. so we usually had some sort of small electrical problem, or had to do some on the spot riggin. Hope this helps...

Ah, I almost forgot. I keep everything neatly packed in a Contico Box. Which is a ruggedized plastic tool box which locks. I like it because it keeps everything organized has ample storage space for all of my tools. I believe you can pick em up at your local Sears, or Walmart.. Also some J.B. Weld or other type of quick epoxy, and a box of condoms or latex gloves, to wrap electical parts and provide extra protection when moisture is imminent.

It's a question of how much stuff you want to keep in the truck...
I have a desert tool box for my bike that works well because after all the trucks metric...The box has a complete set of 1/4" drive sockets, wrenchs 8mm-19mm screwdrivers, 1/2" Craftsman flex head ratchet and socket for the truck wheels, misc pliers, dikes, safety wire & pliers, 12V test light, several shop towels and cottong gloves and no less the 3 different flashlights and extra batteries...The box goes out on riding weekends or when off roading(see attach pic on how it stays put)
My 30ft strap always stays in the truck along with all the flashlights...
