Hello everyone. I have been looking for a truck to use as a tow truck for the tracks. I've read about the common issues with the brakes and rear diff. My question to you guys is, "is it worth it"? As beautiful as the Titan is, is it worth the hassle that comes with it in the future? I'll be needing to tow my car every month to the tracks which is a good 2 hour drive. I'm looking for a used one as I don't want to have payments. There's an 05' 4x4 in my price range with 62,000 miles. I really want to get it, but fear having issues with the truck as I deal with issues on my track car all the time.
So for those of you that use this thing for a lot of towing, is it worth it? Or should I look elsewhere for a reliable tow truck?
If you didn't already know the answer, you would have moved on already. A truch with 62k on it has probably already had any problems addressed. That truck will tow an track car you can throw at it without a problem.

From my understanding the problems were never addressed by Nissan. I thought everyone kept having to get the rear end replaced over and over whenever the rear diff went out. Am I wrong on this? I am only going by what I read in one of the stickied threads.
If the issues Nissan was having on the rear end was resolved, then this deal is a go. I found a beautiful black 05' 4x4 I want so bad.
Honestly, these are the only trucks I love to look at.

I love the American Diesel trucks that are out there (mostly the Chevy's). But they're out of my price range. I'm only looking to spend 14k for the truck.

"WARRANTY warranty, additional 5 years, 162000 miles warranty."
But the problem is, I'm moving out of Dallas to Cali on the 3rd of March. I'm curious if this is a warranty that they only cover, or if I could use this warranty at any Nissan Dealership. (Where the truck is being sold is not at a Nissan Dealership, this is why I ponder this question)

It depends if you want the added expense of maintaining a diesel truck. Except for those who claim they get 20+mpg all the time with their diesels (yeah right!), they cost more to own over the longterm.
As for a dream truck, the goofy GMT900 2500HD's ain't one of them. I'd prefer a custom built twin turbo long travel susp equipped Titan with all the goodies. Now that would be a dream truck! Except for the front brakes and rear diff, the Titan is pretty rock solid when it comes to 1/2 ton PU's. Just plan to replace the front rotors at regular intervals when they warp and get a Trutrac if the diff craps out. After that, you should be golden.
The only major problem I had with my '05 were the front brakes. After getting them fix two times, I've had no other problems. However, I don't abuse it nor do I tow/haul heavy loads with it. I paid $18.8k for mine new back in '05 with only 4 miles on it.

You sir, may want to do some more research. I know for a fact that the Ford 7.3s will get 20+ MPG and that was with 35s. Mine would get 19 or so in town, and 22-23 on the highway (01 ext cab, long bed, 4x4 lariat with a 4" lift on 35s) and that was with the Superchips programmer, Exhaust and cai. My dad's first Superduty (98.5 4 door short bed 4x4) would also get around the same, and it had a leveling kit and 33s with exhaust, programmer, and cai. Now I know the 7.3s are slow compared to all the newer Diesel's, but they are virtually indestructable and they get great fuel mileage with a programmer.

How did you measure this? Carefully emptying the tank and filling it with precise amounts of fuel and then recorded it mulitple times to average it out?
I've done my research on diesel fuel economy and that's the conclusion I've come up with unfortunately. You've got to look through a lot of posts on many different sites, but you begin to see certain trends when you weed through the BS hype. Also, I had a late model Cummins Ram for a short time so I have some personal experience with diesels.
The conclusion? The mpg is not as great as some diesel owners would have you believe. 20+mpg average? Highly doubtful unless you live in a billard ball table of a state and follow with nazi-like precision all the speed limits and never go above 65mph. Yeah, I know they can get up to 20+mpg, but so can some Titans in very rare, goldylocks-like, conditions.
Are diesels better than gas engines when it comes to fuel economy? Sure they are. they're a lot more efficient. I never said otherwise. However, they're not the Toyota Prius's some diesel owners would have you believe.
The powerstroke 7.3 may not have as much power as the later ones, but they seem to be a lot more rellable. The 6.0L has been nothing but trouble for Ford. So bad that Navistar has stopped shipments to Ford.

Haha you're right I don't know how to do simple division averaged throughout the whole time I owned the truck. I am quite illiterate. Go ahead read up on some gas mileage that people are getting with the 7.3s and a programmer set on the lowest setting and please do share with me what they tell you. You say you've "done research", I think you may need to do some more. This is what I've personally experienced, not what I read off of some forum. If you don't believe me, go ahead ask BigBadWlf2500 what kind of fuel mileage he was getting and that's on a newer Chevy. I don't care what you want to think you've read on internet forums, I've owned the trucks, done the math, and seen it for myself multiple times. I love you forum readers that think because you read it online, it's the gospel.
