Got my truck back with new seal.....to mod or not

Searched like the ****ens and I have read good and bad things about the axle vent mod.......I guess my main question is this: Does this mod make the axle breathe better or does it just keep water out????

The whole oil puddling out of the filter has got me concerned about doing this mod. Could I just remove the vent, clean it up good, let it dry and reinstall to keep from having problems????

Thanks to all replies

There will be no oil puddling if the mod is done correctly. I only ran my hose and filter up under the bed and tucked it in a little consealed area and have never had a problem. Must be something else causing those problems.

Re: Got my truck back with new seal.....to mod or not

I was debating it also.... 15K ago. I've done it and I have no problems. No oil blown out through the hose and nothing will come back through with the fuel filter on the end of the hose. Best of all, no leaky seals yet (beside the pinion seal which TallTexan informed me was most likely from axle wrap while towing.)

Cleaning the stock vent would be better than nothing. However, the stock vent only lets air out but not back in. I've opened the oil fill bolt on the diff and you could hear the air rushing in. That's when I went out, bought the stuff, and did the mod that day.
