Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

Yikes! Diesel is up to $5.00 dollars a gallon around here. I bet diesel owners are feeling the pinch. lol!

Since Nissan is supposedly developing an "in-house" heavy duty Titan-like truck, I wonder if the high price of diesel may get them to rethink their plans on that particular model. Do you think this will also get the other automakers to rethink their 1/2 diesel ton plans as well? At least delay them for the short term future? Unless they get a consistent 20+MPG out of these new 1/2 ton diesels, I'm not sure if people are going to be flooding the showrooms to get one.

The light duty Titan replacement is going to be just a '09 Ram clone, but what about the Nissan designed HD that's coming down the pike? I'd hate to see Nissan fail on the HD version as well since they failed on their sales goal target with the Titan.

What do the rest of you think?

We can't cripple an oil company.
China and India are right there, willing and able to absorb any surplus we might create with an extended boycot.

The China/India thing mentioned above has a LOT to do with the world oil market. They're relatively new, but HUGE players in the consumption of the worlds oil. I'm not sure if a new President will have much of an affect.

Re: Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

I am all ready seeing the impact. A lot of small mom and pop operations have shut down. Hell my grocery bill has almost doubled in the last 6 months. Eating out for lunch is a luxary now for two reasons, one it's expensive and two most of the mom and pop lunch stops are closed up.

I don't think once Bush is gone the price of oil will drop much if at all and as soon as he gone the President will be at fault for not fixing the problem right away. Right now oil price is being stock market driven, the supply and demand has not changed since January. Canada and Opec are still producing the same amount of crude. This india and China BS is just that BS. You can't tell me that they have all of a sudden had massive need of oil overthat last 5-6 months. We are our own worts enemies. We as a country/culture thrive on dyno fuels. Once the price is up and people keeping it it will not go down.

getting ready everyone we are fixing to a depression. It's coming

Re: Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

Oil prices have nothing to do with the president, and little to do with supply and demand at the moment.

Oil prices are high for several reasons.

1. The housing market bust and the Federal Reserve's decision to keep lowering rates has brought the dollar to an all time low against the Euro. OPEC prices oil in US dollars. Since the dollar is weak, it takes more of them to buy the same barrel of oil. Also, it doesn't help when the Feds decide to print more money as needed.

2. Because the dollar is weak, investors are buying up commodities like oil as a hedge against inflation. This new "gold rush" has artificially inflated prices to an all time high.

3. Thanks to the tree huggers and doomesday global warming hippies, it's nearly impossible to build a refinery or exploit or own resources. We have a tremendous amount of oil, along with shale that could be processed, which would reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Lack of refinery capacity is more of a problem than availability of oil.

By the way, did you know that the first Earth Day, back in 1970, the hot topics were global famine and global cooling? That was a crock, just as much as global warming caused by man. The earth has natural fluctuations in it's climate. At some points in history, it was a giant snowball. Other times, it was a hot steamy jungle. Man has little impact on the Earth. If we continue to let these idiot environmentalists legislate a bogus global warming fix, then we'll continue to spiral towards economic disaster.

Back on topic, you will see a gas price bubble within the next year. Prices will fall as fast as they have risen, although I don't think they will go below $2/gallon, due to supply and demand.

Re: Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

And so back to the topic. I wonder what oil/diesel prices will do to the plans of companies such as Nissan in their long term plans? It's not cheap to get diesel engines to comply with the newer emissions ratings that are coming, though I'm not sure if trucks are exempt from those? And a relatively small gain in MPG along with very high diesel prices, and higher cost of diesel vehicles? Don't know which way that will go.

Re: Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

Personally, I think if diesel prices are substained, it will kill the light duty diesel trucks.

My Titan gets 19mpg on the highway. Who would want to pay $1 or more per gallon to gain 2 or 3 mpg?

Hybrid powertrains, using a diesel engine, could be a worthwhile venture.

Doesn't Dodge have a hybrid powertrain in the works that could find it's way into the "new and improved" Titan once that partnership is in full swing?

Re: Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

There will always be a need for diesel pickup trucks, and I think Nissan should continue as long as it's marketed to the right crowd. I for sure don't picture them selling like they used to until oil prices stabilize for a while - which i'm guessing will happen when gasoline hits around $5/gallon.

Let's see.... gas has tripled since he's been in office and he's been stuck like glue to big oil throughout his life before President. Hmmmm, makes one wonder.

All the China/India talk is pure speculation at this point. In reality, world consumption has gone up about 1.5% in the last year.

I agree that long term we might be screwed and that we need to do something but this whole latest price spike is based on speculation and our current administration's inability or care to do anything about it.

(cough)What about the Democratic Congress? (cough)

Oh yeah, they are doing a dog and pony show with the heads of Big Oil and decided to stop putting oil in the National Reserve. How did those actions effect prices?

That's right.

Oh, don't forget, they passed on the chance to become less dependent on foreign oil by voting thumbs down on a Republican proposal to explore for oil in ANWR and off shore on May 13, 2008.

Re: Diesel is up to $5.00 a gallon!!!

people always blame bush and don't understand how the government really works...there are 3 yes THREE branches....this is not a dictatorship where the president is the one calling all the shots...how about some blame to the legislative branch if you don't like the current policies

and that's not even taking into account all of the "outside" influences on government decisions (big business, oil and so on)
