so, i have a 06 cc 4wd and i use it primarily for towing. i have 23,5k on it, and at least 22k of that is towing mileage.
i popped the rear a year and half ago, which was replaced. i putchased a extra capacity cover and did the vent mod. now, the rear is starting to whine again. before you ask, i check the rear diff fluid every week before i tow, and remove metal on the dipstick magnet. it is there every time, like clockwork, so it came as no surprise when it started whining again. i used amsoil, and this one lasted 13k vs the original mobil filled diff with 7~10k.
to top it off, the front diff has a grumbling to it. ugh. i have had some minor little issues with the truck (seats creaking, tailgate cable, wonky gas guage) but those are stupid issues that can be overlooked. popping a rear once a year and a front diff every other year is fugging retarded.
seriously, i do not care so much about looks, but the titan is def more attractive, that i will give it. i do like the truck, and she has a ton of balls which is awesome for towing. as far as the tundra goes, i have heard of minor issues when they first came out (cold start knock) and little annoyances, but i have not heard of serious mechanical issues at all. anyone chime in on this?
Spend some time on tundra forums. You'll see it isn't all peaches and cream.
And nobody needs to talk you into or out of buying what's right for you. You're a big boy. Do your research and make a decision. That's what big boys do. Don't depend on hearsay and what others think. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. Your choice.
Graduate from a half ton to a 3/4 ton truck maybe? You can get 3/4 ton HD Silverados in gasoline engines if you don't want to pony up for diesel engine and fuel.

alrighty tough guy. and yes, i poked around the tundra forum, i didn't see anything like pos rear failing from towing a 5k load. just wanted to see if anyone else knew of anything bad like trans falling out, so then i could take my titan lumps and bruises like everyone else here.

i am done with GM garbage. that is what i replaced the titan with. i really do not think i need a 3/4 ton to tow a 5,000 load, but perhaps i am kidding myself?
I say you get on the Tundra sites and see their complaints about the new Tundra. Most Tundra owners that aren't happy with the truck say the powertrain is awesome for the most part but, the rest of the truck was put together cheaply and with cheap parts. If you do alot of towing you may want to consider a diesel 3/4 ton. I have an 05 and never once towed anything and i've had my diff replaced twice so I feel your pain.

There were some major mechanical issues with the Tundra including camshafts snapping (which I believe has been resolved) along with some tranny issues. Like others have said, the Tundra forums have their fair share of complaints about issues with the truck. I'm willing to bet that you'll find similar threads on every other truck forum out there. Basically, there are no guarantees, so you could purchase a Tundra and end up with issues regardless.
One thing to consider about the Tundra; the rear portion of the frame is still a C-channel, not boxed, probably the reason the bed bounce is so bad.
Ultimately, your decision. Do your research and if the Tundra seems right for you, go for it.

I wouldn't want a GM either, but it was a thought. No, you shouldn't need to have a 3/4 ton for a 5k load.

You tow a lot. The Titans still have differential problems. We now have 08 Titans with differential seals failing and not with the type of towing you do. Titans are zoom-zoom trucks. I would buy me a truck that was more suited for the towing you do. Maybe wait till 2010 and by the Titan made by Dodge. Maybe then you can get a better setup for towing. I have never been a dodge fan but those heavy dutys can pull. Just buy what you want.

do you really want to drive around the ugliest truck on the market?
i mean if I wanted something that looked like a ford ranger mixed with a chrysler 300 and a dodge magnum and one of those weird subura station wagons with a pick up bed, then I would definitly go with a tundra. But since I am not into that...I like my titan...
looks to be the same rear... until i can get concrete proof it is not the same, i am sure my problems will continue.
Have to call BS on this info not sure where you got it. I have read that the True-Trac will not work in 2008 or newer, and they are not planning on making one for us now that Nissan is planning to outsource future Titans to Dodge. I have an 08 now, have towed with it, and have ZERO problems. I also have nearing 20k miles on it. Hope this helps.

Tundra is more reliable...go for it. It's got its problems, but no widely reported that leave you stranded like the Titan's rear end issues.
